League of Legends is about to have a lot of… sponsors. Riot has just announced plans to sell Rift Area Banners (Chess) so that tournaments can brand advertising for esports viewers at home. In other words, you will soon see ads right on the battlefield during professional matches, similar to traditional sports.
“Starting with the Summp Split,” Riot explained in the announcement, “fans who watch League of Legends esports streams will see more esports franchises live on Summoner Rift in the future, you can expect tournaments to. start testing them so sponsors can engage with local and regional fans.”
Summer Split starts on June 13, so their spawn time could also fall around this time. Pro players still see the normal Summoner’s Rift map, without the sponsor flags so they won’t be distracted by these flags when playing. The Arena Banner will only be visible to viewers.
As seen in the image below, MasterCard was one of the first sponsors to show up.
