Specter is considered the most competitive carry in the game right now and there are a lot of people who don’t know how to deal with this hero. Specter is strong, has high damage, can lane well, is extremely versatile mid-game, and has almost second-to-none late game potential. So how do we counter Specter here?
WIN ON THE STRONGEST POINT
One of the most effective ways to deal with Specter is to focus the counter completely on what makes the hero so strong: Disperson. While Silver Edge’s stats aren’t very good and don’t exactly match any hero in the game, it can still be boosted by most core melee regardless of their attributes.
This item is extremely useful as long as when activating the effect of Silver Edge, your team can take advantage of that short Break time to maximize damage. So don’t try to build it as one of the first main items if you’re playing a stealth hero. Echo Strike’s effects and mana regeneration aren’t exactly what core heroes need.
In addition, there are some heroes that have Break built-in in their skill set. Viper is one of the most successful heroes when facing Specter, as long as the team has any control effects, Specter is forced to go to BKB, an item that Specter does not want to increase at all. Another option is Nyx Assassin, but getting this hero into some formations can be a bit tricky when the hero doesn’t have high damage and needs some specific teammates to replenish the damage needed on a passive Break.
This option is worth considering, but it’s too volatile: you won’t have the right carry to hold a Silver Edge in every game. Meanwhile, the heroes that have Break available, are generally okay, but not too special. We have several other options to explore.
LIFE PRIORITY
Swapping goals in teamfight is inevitable, but against Specter, prioritizing the life of the support is a very important task. Desolate greatly increases DPS, but it depends heavily on the position of the isolated subject. Standing together in Dota 2 is not the best idea, but when facing Specter, you should stand closer to your teammates to make it easier to control and support each other.
Another great option is to summon units if possible. In the current 7.27 meta patch, Specter is now rare on Radiance. Instead, the hero focused on the Manta Style + Diffusal Blade combo early. Having one or two allied creeps nearby in combat will significantly reduce Specter’s DPS.
Typically Undying is probably one of the game’s most powerful Specter heroes: constantly creating zombies to make sure the desolate doesn’t work, saving support lives and keeping core resources.
It is very difficult to handle Specter in 1v1 with most cores. But if you have a teammate, anyone, combat is a lot easier: without Desolate, Specter really doesn’t deal much damage or at least isn’t stronger than other cores with the same amount of farm.
FACE UP TO TIME
A unique feature of Specter is that the hero can gank anywhere on the map with the ulti Haunt. Know when it’s on cooldown for proper movement: if the opposing team has a hero that initiates the fight from afar, be it a group hero named Spirit or simply any hero with a stun then you have to be careful. while going from duels to board games.
Specter’s power when ganking solo and Specter participating in 2v2 ganks are completely different, as discussed above. Just having an ally there is enough to guarantee survivability, or at least be able to use some spells, as well as buy time for teammates to come help.
Although it can also be classified as “prioritizing life”, this point needs to be emphasized. One of the reasons Specter is so powerful in pubs is because the hero’s macro ability is extremely easy: you farm safely and can join any teamfight on the map. It’s easy to implement, but doesn’t necessarily offer a clear advantage. Specter can be lured or used to waste his ultimate and become less dangerous for the next two minutes.
EPILOGUE
Specter is one of the most annoying heroes to face in pubs, but in the professional scene, his win rate is less than impressive. That means the hero isn’t too strong, it’s just that no one knows how to counter it and that makes Specter scary in pubs.
Another reason is that pub gamers are often poor at finishing matches. Although Specter is not exactly a monster that is almost immortal at the end of the game like before, but we should not belittle and prolong the game, if possible, just end the game and make a new game.
So what do you think about this hero? Do you think heroes should be nerfed or are players simply complaining for not knowing how to fight? Please share your thoughts!
