Cloud9 is proving their strength, reaching the top 4 of ESL One Cologne after a pretty good performance at ECS season 3 and PGL Krakow Major Main Qualifier. HLTV.org had an interview with Jake “Stewie2K” Yip after their win over NiP.
Despite an unfavorable start, going 0-2 due to a loss to NiP alongside Natus Vincere, Cloud9 also secured a place in the playoffs on the final day of the group stage, defeating mousesports and Immortals. Stewie2K is an important factor in those two important matches.
Stewie2K thought that NiP would choose Overpass
In an interview with HLTV.org, Jake “Stewie2K” Yip talked about the return of Mike “shroud” Grzesiek and Tyler “Skadoodle” Latham, getting into the Major and picking maps with NiP.
Did it have any effect on getting the top 4 at ECS season 3, did it break your streak of poor results? Do these two tournaments have any connection?
At ECS when shroud said we needed to wake up and start working hard, it motivated us. And for sure when we get through the group stage, that gives us the strength to keep going. As for the Major qualifer… we all know we’ve missed too many Major seasons and we have to work harder. We always have confidence, the team never falters, even when we lose to G2, we know that we will continue to win.
In this tournament too, even though we lost 2 games, not a single member thought they were eliminated from the tournament. It’s just that we lost to strong teams. We played well, but we made basic mistakes and we paid the price with that game. We just had to fix that to get through the group stage, and we did.
Going back to the match against Natus Vincere on the Train map, it was a cross country race, tell about that match and ultimately lose, how do you feel?
Even if we are losing in extra time to Natus Vincere, if I don’t remember correctly we are losing 18-16. We know we can still come back, the game isn’t over yet. I looked at everyone, and we both knew we could ‘come back’, we were so close to leveling the game. And the more overtime, the higher the tension. After losing, I feel like it was probably one of the most regrettable matches I’ve ever played
The team faced mousesports, and it went to extra time again and we won, so I feel pretty good. We know what it’s like to lose an important game with so much extra time, and we’re also happy to be able to win that game, twice overtime in a decisive match. .
You guys made it to the playoffs and once again faced NiP. You guys met them in the first game, on the map Cache, and they entered the next round with a score of 3-0 by playing only the correct map Cache. How does that affect the ban pick phase? And did you intend to ban the cache?
Currently Nuke is not our forte map so it’s on our ban list, so we have to ban it. Honestly, I was flawed when I let them pick Cache, the team didn’t play Overpass recently and the last time we played that map FaZe destroyed us. So I thought they’d pick Overpass, but when they picked Cache and left Cobblestone over Inferno, we knew this BO3 was on our side.
Talk about Train and especially the CT side. It was a perfect CT performance, no rounds lost, can you talk about it a bit?
Honestly, we’re losing 5-10 before going to CT, we know that the pistol round is the most important round. But personally I still know that even if we lost the pistol round, our CTs on Train were so strong that we could always come back, the game wasn’t over until it was over. We played CT so well, in fact, there were some rounds that could have been won by any team and could have changed the game. shroud has clutched a lot of rounds for the team, I’m glad he’s back, regaining his confidence. Seeing the smile on his face on stage, I was very happy.
Another player that needs to be mentioned is Skadoodle. He’s been doing really well in the last couple of tournaments. Skadoodle had a bad time in the past, but now it’s back. Do you know what changed him, back to his form?
I think the whole team is doing really well, that’s what makes us so strong right now, because in one game I can play really well, then autimatic… and we can blow away. all teams when the whole team plays well. Now, Ska, I think he’s found himself. I’m not sure what changed him but I think he knew he needed to be more aggressive, had to change his style of play. I think he’s a good fit for active play. That’s the reason for Ska’s return.
Let’s talk about shroud and his place on the team. There has been a lot of talk about him playing in the support position – support, but at the same time in an active role. How do you think he fits into the team, in terms of roles and also on the map?
I think the key point is communication, because we don’t communicate very much during practice. And when you know each person’s strengths, then you can come up with strategies. I know a few strategies on Train that he loves to use. I know that’s the position he plays and that’s his strength, but it’s a weak position for me. So it’s good for shroud to take my position, which I don’t like. That’s when we became scarier.
Cloud9 will face Natus Vincere then. They had an ‘upset’ (beating a strong team) against G2, winning 2-0. What do you expect from this match?
Recently Na`vi has been struggling, I think they have finally found their form. Currently, they are really strong compared to all other teams, but losing to them on Train map in the group stage is a real pity. We just got our revenge on NiP so I hope I can get revenge on Na`vi too.
