Create spreadsheets on LibreOffice Calc
Before performing the steps, you need to set up a spreadsheet containing the information to which you want to add Mail Merge. LibreOffice Calc is a great spreadsheet program you can use to organize your messages.
Use a spreadsheet to organize specific personal details for each email, such as recipient names and email addresses.
You can set up spreadsheets on LibreOffice Calc the same way you create other spreadsheets. Create column headers that correspond to the variables you’ll add to the email. Then, fill in the data that matches each column.
Once done, select File =>Save As. The file saving window will appear on the screen. In the bottom left corner you will find a drop-down menu with file format options. Click on that menu and scroll down to find and select the format Text CSV(.csv). This is the format that Thunderbird accepts. Download the Mail Merge add-on
Open Thunderbird, then open the menu in the top right corner of the screen, click Add-ons. In the menu on the left, click Extensions. This window has a search bar on the right side of the screen. Import Mail Merge in the search bar, then on the list of search results, select and install the Mail Merge add-on.
Thunderbird will require a reboot to apply the Mail Merge add-on.
Compose email
Once Thunderbird starts backing up, you can use Mail Merge. Start by composing an email the same way you normally would.
Mail Merge uses variables, like: “{{Email}}”. Anywhere you want to add information from the spreadsheet, just set these variables.
Make sure that the words inside the brackets match the column headings that you have set up in the spreadsheet.
Once you’ve finished composing, go to File on the email window, select Mail Merge for mail merge with Thunderbird and Libreoffice Calc
A window will appear on the screen. Establish Source to be CSV, then browse the CSV file you saved from LibreOffice Calc. All other settings you can keep. Alternatively you can send the following messages, Thunderbird will create the messages and store them in the outbox. You can check messages for errors before sending them. Otherwise, you can send the message immediately.
