How to Design a 3D Logo in Adobe Illustrator
1. Create a new document
Step 1: Open Adobe Illustrator and create a new document containing the following parameters.
Step 2: Access Preferences =>Guides & Grid and create a grid with parameters like below:
Step 3: Access View tab and tick the options View =>Show grid and View =>Snap to grid.
2. Create Basic Shapes
Step 1: Use the Ellipse Tool (L) to create a 200x200px circle in the center of the artboard. Then draw another 100x100px smaller circle inside the first circle.
Step 2: Next draw another circle 150x150px in size. center the center of the first two shapes and move it twice to the right using the arrow keys.
Draw 2 rectangles, one 50x50px and the other 50x25px, and place them in the center of each ellipse as shown below:
Step 3: Select all the objects and use the Shape Builder tool (Shift+M) to merge these objects. Combined with the use of parameters as shown below.
Delete the parts that we don’t need.
Step 4: Use the Direct Selection tool (A) to round the corners until a core arch is obtained. Remove lines from 2 objects.
3. Draw, create edges
The next step we now need to do is draw the edges to add depth to the logo.
Step 1: Disable the grid. Access Preferences =>General. In the frame Keyboard Increment, enter the value 0.50px. Select the part to the left of the arch and move left by pressing the arrow key 10 times. Then move the object to the back by selecting Object =>Arrange =>Send to back.
Copy (press Ctrl+C Crtl+F) another part of the arch and shift it to the right by pressing the arrow key 10 times. Then move the object to the back. Using tools Shape Builder (Shift + CODE) to remove excess parts from the arch.
Step 2: Highlight the right part of the arch and shift it to the right by pressing the arrow key 10 times, then move the object backwards. Fill the object with dark colors to easily distinguish it from the main design.
4. Add gradient and transparency
To add 3D effect, we apply gradient and transparent layer.
Step 1: Use the Gradient tool (G) to apply a linear gradient to the left part of the logo and the back of the logo. Then add another gradient to the edges of the logo.
Step 2: Select the upper part of the logo, copy (Ctrl+C Ctrl+F) and fill it with yellow. Then duplicate the object again and fill it with red.
Use the Direct Selection tool (A) to select the bottom point of the arch. Move this point upwards by pressing the arrow key once. Select the red and yellow objects, then click Minus Front in Pathfinder tab.
Step 3: Do the same steps with the same part of the arch, with the edges to create a bevel effect.
Step 4: Fill the beveled edges with a transparent gradient as shown below. Apply gradient to all parts according to bevel.
5. Apply reflections
To make the logo look more realistic, we will apply reflections and light.
Step 1: Duplicate the top 2 times and fill in the yellow and red colors respectively.
Move the image above 3 times to the left, press and hold the Shift key. Select 2 pictures and click Minus Front in Pathfinder tab.
Use the Gradient Tool (G) to apply a white gradient from 50% to 0%.
Step 2: Create a halo above and below the logo applying the same steps in step 1.
Step 3: Copy the part above the logo. Use the Pen tool (P) to draw a curve that cuts across the object.
Select curves and objects. Click select Divide in Pathfinder tab. Use the Ungroup command (Object => Ungroup) and delete the remaining redundant parts. Apply a white gradient with 50% opacity to the object.
Step 4: Duplicate the 2 objects in the previous step and fill the objects with yellow and red respectively. Use the Pen Tool (P) to create the center anchor point as shown below and move the point up.
Click select Minus Front To create a new highlight and red and white, use 50% opacity.
Step 5: Follow the same steps to create a reflection on the top and bottom of the logo.
6. Finishing the logo
Step 1: Select the entire logo and group (Ctrl + WOOD), copy group (Ctrl + F), flip vertically and horizontally (Object => Transform =>Reflect). Arrange the 2 groups as shown below and group all the objects.
Step 2: Use the Rectangle tool (M) to create the background. Draw a rectangle 800x600px and fill it with dark blue. Move the rectangle to the back and align the logo to the center position.
