CSGO’s rank distribution system has been stable. That means some gamers will have to climb the ranks more difficult.
In 2015, Valve admitted there was an issue with how players were ranked in CSGO. The data shows that there are a lot more high ranked gamers than lower ranked players. As a fix, Valve rolled out one of the most controversial changes to the CSGO ranking system. CSGO rank distribution from a large arc at high rank to a balanced arc as it is now.
The picture above is the rank distribution before Valve changed. When Valve adjusted, many players dropped their rank to a lower skill group to balance the map. In order to keep the CSGO rank distribution system as shown below, Valve also added a limit to prevent large fluctuations.
Rank distribution system makes rank climbing more difficult
This is why it is sometimes difficult for you to rank up in CSGO. Not only do you have to play better and improve your skills to beat weaker players, but you sometimes have to wait for someone higher than you to play worse.
The only way for CSGO to keep such an even arc is to limit the number of people in each rank. League of Legends does the same thing and the leaderboard shows them exactly how many people are above and below them in that category.
In CSGO, this is completely hidden. It explains why some players consistently win and top frags in the team but still don’t rank up. Simply put, if the higher ranked person still wins, then it’s hard for you to rank up.
There are a few tricks to getting the rank up, but they have nothing to do with Valve’s ranking system. For example, playing at a different time of day can affect the opponents you meet. A game that takes place at noon when everyone goes to school will have more senior and high school players, compared to a game that takes place on Saturday afternoon.
In general, the CSGO rank distribution system in 2020 looks no different from the adjustments in 2015. But the way to rank up in CSGO is still the same. You have to play consistently well!
