How is Apex Legends different from Fortnite?

Apex Legends is currently dominating the gaming world this week. This is a fast-paced, fresh game in the Battle Royale genre and has been challenging Fortnite for the top spot on Twitch for nearly a week. Both these titles are Battle Royale genres, but there are some distinct differences between them:

Graphics

The first thing that players will notice is that Apex differentiates Fortnite graphically. While Apex retains the cartoonish brushstrokes of the game’s characters, it doesn’t stand out as much as Fortnite.

Apex Legends is a game world that takes place in the Titanfall game series universe of developer Respawn. Like Titanfall, the world of Apex is realistic. The buildings look like those from a sci-fi movie. Although the graphics tend to be cartoonish, we still feel the “realism” in this world.

On the other hand, Fortnite is heavily animated. A lot of the skins and features in Fortnite are not “realistic” of the outside world. Fortnite’s appeal does not come from imitating the real world, but trying to create its own sense of humor. Both games have their own unique and distinct graphics.

Construction vs Skills

The building system in Fortnite is truly legendary. Before Fortnite, there were hardly any other shooters that built as well. Except for a few Minecraft mods, building and shooting didn’t really exist before that. Fortnite exploded with the fun and smoothness of the game’s building system.

The build system in Fortnite introduces new ideas to the shooter genre in high to low terrain shooting situations. It allows players to put themselves up high to take advantage of that. If you watch two highly skilled Fortnite players play against each other, you’ll feel like you’re watching an intense chess match.

Apex avoids imitating Fortnite in this way and uses a class system. Classes in Apex are called Legend and each class has its own unique characters. The game’s Legend system is very similar to Overwatch, and in each Legend has its own set of skills. These skills can be passive or active.

Each character in Apex can use any weapon they find, similar to Fortnite, but they will have additional tricks to do many of the things they like. For example, if you like the high altitude gameplay of Fortnite, give Pathfinder a try. This character is an agile robot capable of using a tow hook. Apex almost possesses a character that suits each of us.

If you like stealth, try Wraith. This character can teleport himself and his teammates around the map.

Squad vs Solo

An interesting decision Apex made when the game first launched was that it only had a Squad mode. Apex has yet to share its intention to add Solo to the game.

While Apex doesn’t have a solo or duo like Fortnite, the game’s 3-player squad isn’t boring at all. As with any team game, you sometimes get teammates who are not willing to cooperate, but if they are willing to play together, the game will be very interesting.

Some characters have support/heal skills to motivate everyone to work together. The fact that Apex only has squads is really an interesting decision from a game promotion perspective. If players get bored playing with a random player, they will try to get their friends to join the game.

Fortnite meanwhile allows solo players if they want to. This means that those who prefer to play in groups will choose squads more, otherwise just play solo.

Although we have only mentioned the obvious differences between Apex and Fortnite, the two games have very different experiences. Fortnite’s appeal comes from its building system and colorful world. As for Apex, it’s the unique characters and the way they change the tempo of the game.

Both Apex Legends and Fortnite are interesting and different feel, even though they are both battle royale. Since the boom of Fortnite and PUBG, the Battle Royale genre has really been saturated as developers try to launch their games to compete for this market share. Apex tries to create its own unique and interesting, not just make money.
