Krafton and PUBG Santa Monica, the owners of the PUBG Mobile copyright, have just filed a lawsuit against Garena Online, accusing the mobile game version of Free Fire Max of stealing their mobile battle royale game idea. By the way, Krafton and the California branch of the Korean game company also sued both Google and Apple because the Play Store and App Store helped distribute the plagiarized work.
Earlier in 2017, Krafton also sued Garena in a Singapore court after Free Fire: Battlegrounds was released. Even then, both sides reached a mutual agreement, the publisher PUBG Mobile (formerly Bluehole) said that they did not copyright any gameplay ideas or features for Free Fire at all. This means that you can’t use those copy features anymore.
And now Krafton brought a 100-page lawsuit to the Central District Court of California, demanding that Garena pay them $ 150,000 in compensation for each detail in Free Fire Max that the court found was a copy of PUBG Mobile. As for Apple and Google, Krafton alleges that these two giants distributed the application copy ideas on the App Store and Play Store, while YouTube also shared gameplay videos of Free Fire Max. In the lawsuit, the details they allege Garena copy include the feature that allows players to gather at a certain point before the match, the ability to parachute at the beginning of the match, items such as “hat 3” or the pans, or the “listening crate” feature with high-end items dropped by plane. The difficulty for Krafton is that these features are available in every battle royale game now, from Fortnite to Warzone.
Earlier in May 2018, Krafton also sued Epic Games, the owner of Fortnite for similar allegations in a Korean court, but only a month later they withdrew the lawsuit without specifying the reason.
