In April 2009, Heroes of Newerty (HoN) entered beta – the same month as League of Legends (LoL. The two tried to compete for players from Warcraft 3 – Defense of the Ancients (DOTA 1) League defeated HoN a few months later, and Heroes of Newerth spent $30 in the first year before deciding to go free.Meanwhile, LoL was already among the top most played games in the world. With a smaller fan base, Heroes of Newerth has been around for a decade, but just now, the studio announced their last major update.
“At the moment, patch 4.7.3 is expected to be the last patch with big content and important adjustments. HoN’s future patches will be mostly minor balancers and/or bug fixes, if necessary.”
Looks like the game will stop updating. The patch notes added, “In recognition of the merits of some team members, tooltips for some items with their names have been added to thank them for their efforts in the game!”.
This patch is due out on February 26. The vast majority of HoN players switched to League and Dota 2 years ago, but that doesn’t mean the game is over – even without a major update, fans Loyal HoN could keep the game going for another decade.
