We live in the most expensive Hearthstone era. Zephrys the Great revived Highlander decks, and since they only use a single copy of the cards, using a lot of Legendary cards is an extremely attractive option. Saviors of Uldum is also the most “Epic-friendly” expansion ever, with a lot more playable Epic cards than before.
However, the game still has delicious and cheap cards for players. This article will focus on Neutral cards for all classes. The next lesson will focus on class cards.
Reborn Minion is very strong
Rise of Shadows is an improved expansion from The Boomsday Project for budget players. Mech used to be the main theme, and you can create multiple budget decks for multiple classes using Mech. This is something you couldn’t really do back in The Boomsday Project, because then there were better options.
In Saviors of Uldum, Mech finally has a change of hands: the Reborn minion. With some decks, Mech is still the strongest choice, especially when you want to spread all over the table (Token Druid), but with many budget decks, Reborn minions can create a stronger main lineup than Mech. They are faster and often more dangerous, and are very difficult to clear from the table when appearing in large numbers.
The Reborn minion has a rather special respawn effect: even if the minion token without the Reborn effect is resummon, it will return with the full Reborn effect. In a sense, Reborn operates similarly to the Divine Shield, even if lost, the effect is still the property of this minion. A lot of revival effects are quite expensive, but Redemption is a cheap example of a revival effect that works well in a budget deck with the Reborn minion.
The favorite trio of this article are Temple Berserker, Candletakerand Bone Wraith. They give a mana curve of two to four, stats are good, and the Bone Wraith also protects other minions when they spawn, allowing you to decide whether to face or trade. This trio can be added to many budget decks to be the main lineup in the early game.
The article is also experimental Murmy and Wasteland Assassinbut Murmy is too weak except for Murloc decks, and Wasteland Assassin is a bit slow. Khartut Defender well worth using, but it’s more common in control decks, decks that require a lot of expensive cards to operate: healing and stalling without ‘win conditions’ are fine. useless.
Murloc is back!
Speaking of Murloc, the new Neutral Murloc cards are all strong. Murmy and Fishflinger are good opening cards for a Murloc deck, and most older Murloc cards are also cheap. The only two Epic cards are Murloc Warleader and Nightmare Amalgam. You will really want to have Murloc Warleader in your deck, and Nightmare Amalgam is an option that you can add if you want.
Murloc can sometimes help you win any class, but they are most powerful when used with Shaman – you probably only need Murloc Warleader as an epic card to build a top-tier deck. Murloc Paladin is also another top-tier option, but it is quite expensive if you want to build enough power, because Murloc Paladin also needs Prismatic Lens and Tip the Scalesas well as support with many more Legendary cards.
Zoo is never outdated
Reborn minion works extremely well with Zoo decks, as well as Serpent Egg – great card for self-destruction and as a defense against clearing cards. Unless you’re willing to take home a Magic Carpet to increase the power of 1-mana minons, then Jar Dealer and Beaming Sidekick won’t be of much help.
Combo Priest is a great and cheap option – but not quite Budget
A lot of cheap Neutral cards are used a lot, but only present in one archetype: Combo Priest. Injured Tol’vir, Beaming Sidekickand Neferset Ritualist are strong cards, but there’s absolutely nothing the budget player can do about them. The current Combo Priest is only strong if added Psychopomp and High Priest Amet, while budget versions of the deck all failed. Those are the only expensive cards in the deck, two Epics and one Legendary, so this deck isn’t exactly expensive, but the other cards are useless if you don’t own these expensive cards.
What about the Epic and Legendary cards?
None of the Saviors of Uldum Neutral Epic cards is an important key in the deck. There are some cards that can appear, like Vulpera Scoundrel, but they’re probably the 15th or 20th pick in the deck, not the key to the hand.
As for the Legendary cards, they’re more interesting, but aren’t enough to shape the deck without add-ins.
Zephrys the Great is clearly a phenomenal card, possibly the best of the set. It does require a Highlander deck, however, and creating a good deck around this card isn’t easy: Highlander decks usually cost between 10,000 and 20,000 dust, because they often add a lot of Legendary cards. While some of these are interchangeable, Hearthstone generally doesn’t have late game budget cards. Therefore, in some cases, it’s simply a matter of decks with no substitute cards. This forces the budget deck to go with aggro, and the instability in Highlander decks doesn’t work for aggro, which works best in slow or control midrange decks. So, Zephrys the Great is not a good choice for budget gamers to craft at first.
Siamat is another cool Neutral Legendary minion. It is in many archetypes and classes, but is not a deck profile card. Siamat is dangerous in the mid-late game or to trade minions. While it is easier to use in the deck than Zephrys the Great, Siamat is usually just an add-on card, requiring the presence of other more expensive cards.
King Paulis is a potential win condition for control decks, but control decks also require other expensive cards. Paulis alone cannot carry the game, so this is just a card you should craft when you have enough toys to create a full deck.
The best cards for the Full Deck and the Budget Deck are not always the same
If you are just starting out and are looking for the strongest cards to improve your base deck, the fastest way to do that is to add Reborn minions. Temple Berserker, Candletakerand Bone Wraith are the first three Neutral cards you should add.
Another option is Murloc synergies, but you will need all the Common and Rare Murloc cards of the game: Murloc is very crowd dependent, and you need a lot of Murloc to play. Murmy and Fishflinger are important pieces in any Murloc deck.
The above are the first steps. Then you should find the right class cards and craft specific decks. The next article will talk about the class cards of Saviors of Uldum.
