New Keyword – Frenzy
The new mechanics of this expansion are Frenzie. Frenzy activates when a minion first takes damage and survives. If you think it resembles the old Enrage mechanic… that’s it!
The most important difference between Frenzy and the old Enrage is that Frenzy can only be activated once. Enrage, if the minion is full of health, it will lose the Enrage effect. And Frenzy only once and it’s over.
As you can see in the 3 cards above, Frenzy can activate any effect, from dealing extra damage, turning minions, adding value to the hand. Frenzy cards are definitely stronger in classes that easily damage their own minions, like Warrior for example. Rush is also a bonus for activating Frenzy, since you can attack instantly. That means Animated Broomstick Can be used a lot with Frenzy cards!
New Mechanic – Spell Schools
Minions have had their own attributes (or tribe – like Dragon or Beast) since Hearthstone was born, and now it’s the Spell’s turn to have its own attributes. Hearthstone: Forged in the Barrens will have spells from one of 7 Spell groups: Arcane, Fel, Fire, Frost, Nature, Holy, Shadow. Existing spells will also gain attributes.
We will have synergy with certain spell properties. Currently, the article only knows two, but surely the expansion will have many more cards.
Ranked Spells
And yet, this expansion has one more mechanism that is Ranked Spells. They will start at Rank 1, but are upgraded when you reach 5 mana, then 10 mana. The upgrade is completely free and it doesn’t hurt the cards – they just get stronger.
The Ranked Spell can be quite powerful due to its mobility. For example, Imp Swarm isn’t exactly a strong 2-mana card, but 2 mana 3/2 is still better than nothing. However, you can wait to use it in the mid or late game, when it can summon good or three 3/2 while costing no more mana. Unlike normal 2-mana cards, drawing this card later on isn’t too bad!
