This tutorial will introduce you to some of the strongest squads, as well as creative arrangements in Battlegrounds.
TACTIC:
Battlegrounds offers an irresistible attraction from the tribe Mech: Magnetism, summon, as well as Divine Shield!
When looking at the late game Mech lineup, one thing stands out: Other than Nightmare Amalgam, there are no early game heroes present. This makes it even harder to use an all-Mech squad, as the higher the Tier, the rarer the minion is. Of course, Micro Machine or Mecharoo can hold for the first few turns, but they will weaken very quickly.
This is one of the reasons why Nightmare Amalgam is more important in this formation than the others. Acquiring this minion paves the way for all-Mech gameplay: it has high enough stats and the flexibility required to combine with other pieces.
If you find Cobalt Guardian and Psycho-o-Torn, you won’t need to think twice to buy it right away. These valuable poles are very strong late game due to their effects. Both benefit from Magnetic minions like Replicating Menace, an extremely powerful buff for the Mech tribe.
Similar to Annoy-o-Module. This card equips your powerful minions with Taunt and Divine Shield, not only adding strength but also protecting other important minions. Among them is Security Rover. Again, the Mech summon pairs very well with the Cobalt Guardian, and the Taunt 2/3 minions can buy time, helping you to reach your victory condition.
And that win condition is called Junkbot. Place it on the far right and you will see Junkbot transform into a giant, ready to sweep the opponent’s squad. This piece is so strong that you can even place another copy of it right next to it!
Aside from this main lineup, everything else is just a bonus. The Piloted Sky Golem is quite useful in the mid to late game, and the Foe Reaper 4000 resembles Beast’s Cave Hydra. Kangor’s Apprentice are also great final pieces; However, you need to know the location so that they trigger Deathrattle at the right time!
LOOKING LINE UP TO THE END OF GAME:
THE BEST HERO:
Millificent Manastorm, The Curator, AF Kay, Patchwerk, Nefarian
TACTIC:
The Beast lineup was possibly the strongest and most popular of the past short beta. They rely on strong summons and buffs that work together on the table. Similar to Hearthstone, Scavenging Hyena can cause disaster to opponents if left alive. Thanks to the attack priority system, Scavenging Hyena is often placed on the right edge of the table to receive continuous buffs during the match.
An early Hyena combined with Alleycat or Kindly Grandmother will be enough to help you reach Tavern Tier 3 without much effort. Try to get the Rat Pack early, because this is the ‘best’ Tier 2 piece you want to add to your team.
Cave Hydra doesn’t look strong in theory, but cleave damage is increasingly important in the game, especially against units with Divine Shield. That’s why you place the Cave Hydra on the far left edge, letting it attack and break your opponent’s Divine Shield first. Cave Hydra is also the preferred minion to receive Beast related buffs.
As soon as you have Goldrinn, the Great Wolf, your Beast squad is almost ready. With an all-Beast roster, Goldrinn’s Deathrattle guarantees you a total of 48 stat points – the most effective minion buff in the game. Similar to Cave Hydra, you want to place Goldrinn so that it is hit as soon as possible to maximize efficiency.
The final member of the perfect Beast lineup is Mama Bear. Despite being nerfed, this late game minion buff will still appear on the table. Even if you don’t use an all-beast squad, any Beast summoned will give you the edge. Mama Bear and Rat Pack are considered the strongest combos in Battlegrounds.
The Beast squad has no weakness when it comes to reaching the mid-game strength threshold. However, Divine Shield and Poisonous are considered natural enemies of the Beast, and squads without Cave Hydra can fail miserably against opponents with strong defenses.
LOOKING LINE UP TO THE END OF GAME:
THE BEST HERO:
The Curator, Infinite Toki, The Rat King, Patchwerk
TACTIC:
The Tribe Demon has something other tribes don’t: Extremely early and powerful snowball potential. Thanks to Wrath Weaver’s buff mechanism, early-game Demons like Voidwalker and Vulgar Homunculus are very valuable. Nathrezim Overseer ensures pressure on the table in the mid game with a good 2/4 stats.
Finding Nightmare Amalgam and Soul Juggler should be your top priority if you want to use the Demon squad. Demon Tier 1 and 2 not only buffs Wrath Weaver, but also helps the Soul Juggler activate its skills.
Siegebreaker has high health and aura +1 Attack which helps you keep 1 or 2 more Demon tier low until you find stronger pieces. That can get confusing, as Mal’Ganis and Annihilan Battlemaster are both Tier 5 troops.
Try to roll out Mal’Ganis by triple at Tavern Tier 4; If you’re lucky, you can buff Wrath Weaver to the blue sky. If you can’t find Mal’Ganis, you can retrofit Nightmare Amalgam. Because Nightmare Amalgam owns all the Battlegrounds tribes, this minion is a must-have for every tribe squad.
The final piece of your Demon squad is the Annihilan Battlemaster, which can unleash the snowball potential of the Wrath Weaver. Combined with Mal’Ganis, you can buff this pitlord with tremendous HP, and Defender of Argus’ Taunt completes your Demon squad.
Your last tile can be anything with high damage, so it’s a Tier 6 minion. Voidlord might be a reasonable choice, but it’s just 12 points of net stats anyway, and effects Deathrattle also doesn’t affect the table too much. Of course, if it’s an upgraded Voidlord, it’s different!
As you may have noticed, Demons have a major weakness: They rely heavily on Wrath Weaver, and can only be brought into play if you sacrifice quite a bit of the hero’s health. If you find high-value pieces mid-game, combined with one of the upgraded low-tier demon units, you can make up for the health you’ve spent. If played correctly, the Demon squad has the potential to reach the highest stats at the beginning of the teamfight among tribe-dependent squads.
LOOKING LINE UP TO THE END OF GAME:
THE BEST HERO:
Patchwerk, AF Kay, Nefarian, The Curator, The Rat King, Bartendotron, Lord Jaraxxus.
TACTIC:
Murloc may be the tribe with the gameplay most similar to the traditional Hearthstone. They explode early in the game, and have the snowball potential to get you into the later stages of the game without sacrificing too much.
However, that doesn’t mean you can only play Murloc in the early game. It may be more complicated, but the rewards are also more than other tribe squads!
The secret to Murloc’s success is synergy and buff effects. In addition to the snowball mechanism included in the self buff of Murloc Tidecaller and the buff from Rockpool Hunter, Coldlight Seer, you need to actively get general buffs. Zoobot, Menagerie Magician and even Defender of Argus or Strongshell Scavenger help Murloc get to the later stages of the game.
Similar to other squads, Nightmare Amalgam is a must-have minion in the Murloc squad. Moreover, you should use two copies of it to promote the flexibility of this card in the early and mid game. The Murloc Warleader may be weak in the late game, but it still adds +12 Attack to all Murlocs, and that includes extra summons.
The late game minion that Murloc needs is Gentle Megasaur. If you discover Divine Shield or Poisonous for all Murlocs on the table, then even the strongest Mech lineup will have a hard time winning.
LOOKING LINE UP TO THE END OF GAME:
THE BEST HERO:
Giantfin, The Curator, The Rat King, Bartendotron, The Lich King, Dancin’ Deryl, Shudderwock
TACTIC:
Similar to other Auto Chess games, Battlegrounds also has a “one of each type” lineup. For Hearthstone, the term “Menagerie” describes it. Unlike the other lineups, the decision to play the Menagerie team is only made later in the game.
Specifically, the Lightfang Enforcer plays an important role in any Menagerie formation. Lightfang Enforcer adds 16 stat for the whole table if you use minions of all 4 tribes, and is added continuously for each turn! Even though the Lightfang Enforcer has a stat of only 2/2, this minion’s power is still strong – it pays off in just 1 or 2 rounds, and slowly helps you snowball.
Not only that, Lightfang Enforcer brings flexibility to your Menagerie squad. A lot of weak troops will become unexpectedly strong over time.
Cards like Zoobot and Menagerie Warden can buff your Menagerie, if you can’t find the Lightfang Enforcer early. In this case, Bann Bronzebeard will be your best companion!
However, this should only happen if you can’t find the direction to follow a tribe early on. Being aware of those situations will show your Battlegrounds mastery, and allow you to play Menagerie more, even though you won’t get the Lightfang Enforcer when you reach Tavern Tier 5. However, if you find this minion early, you can soon change to this lineup to ensure strength in the late game.
In the end, Menagerie players need to have a lot of confidence in their creativity to win! Don’t forget Nightmare Amalgam.
LOOKING LINE UP TO THE END OF GAME:
THE BEST HERO:
The Curator, The Rat King, Patchwerk, AF Kay
BATTLECRY
Similar to the Menagerie squad, the Battlecry setup mainly revolves around one piece: Crowd Favorite. Along with the early game Bann Bronzebeard and some Nightmare Amalgam, you can easily mine different Battlecry, while buffing your main unit. However, Crowd Favorite will weaken towards the end of the game, and you should switch to Menagerie to get the most out of the buff… so once you find the Lightfang, switch to it.
DIVINE SHIELD
Compared to other effects, Divine Shield not only makes your tribe squad stronger, but also can set up its own squad. Your main piece is Bolvar, Fireblood, which gains +2 Attack for every minion that loses Divine Shield. Add a bunch of Cobalt Guardians and a few Divine Shield mechs, and you’ve got yourself a very interesting lineup.
DEATHRATTLE/SUMMON
Hearthstone wouldn’t have a Battlegrounds mode without Khadgar! The Deathrattle Summon lineup around this archmage can play on par with other tribe squads in the early and mid game (as long as you have a few minions with the ability to summon other troops – Security Rover for example). But don’t forget to gradually change to another formation when you are in the lead, because this formation is not strong in the late game.
