The battle royale game Fortnite is finally out on Android, but it doesn’t go the traditional route. Developer Epic Games has decided to skip the Google Play Store and only let the game download via the website.
According to information from SensorTower, Google is missing out on $50 million in fees or even more due to Epic’s decision. Fortnite iOS launched in March and has made over $180 million to date. Apple gets 30% of the money for in-game sales, which means Apple pocketed about $54 million thanks to Fortnite.
SensorTower estimates that Fortnite Android sales will be similar, which is why they put the figure at $50 million. There are many people who are concerned that this unorthodox way of downloading games for Android may reduce downloads and affect revenue. However, SensorTower thinks this won’t affect Fortnite’s long-term revenue potential too much.
You can go to Epic’s website to sign up for the Fortnite Android beta. However, if you want to play it, you’ll need a pretty powerful machine, as Epic says the game requires a “next generation high-end Android smartphone”.
Fortnite Android beta has been released on Samsung Galaxy
The iOS App Store is a more closed ecosystem, so Epic can’t do it in the same way as the Android version.
