Ubisoft said it will focus on developing free-to-play games.
According to a latest report from Ubisoft, the father of many hit AAA series like Far Cry or Assassin’s Creed, they will shift their investment focus to free games. Thus, during more than a decade associated with AAA blockbusters, Ubisoft has a different view for the future development direction.
Ubisoft’s CFO Frederick Duguet revealed to VGC magazine that Ubisoft is planning to diversify its game lines. Instead of trying to release 3 or 4 AAA games a year, they will spend money to invest in many free titles and try to push their quality to near AAA level.
Ubisoft’s shift represents a major shift from the vision of the world’s largest game development companies. They will no longer focus all their efforts on $60 AAA games like before. Instead, it’s a mix of online, free-to-play, multiplayer games. Success lessons from Fortnite are still ahead and this can be seen as the future of the game development industry.
In fact, Ubisoft’s AAA game release frequency is also decreasing. After Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, gamers are also waiting a lot for Far Cry 6 or Riders Republic. And who knows, between AAA games in 2021-2022, we will see many quality free games from Ubisoft.
