Geek Fam became the second Southeast Asian team to stop working in Dota 2, even though September has only been less than a week. Transportation issues and more importantly financial hardship from COVID-19 as well as the Dota Pro Circuit being canceled indefinitely are the reasons for this decision.
Like Reality Rift, Geek Fam has just hit the tier 1 team threshold recently. Established at the end of 2016, Geek Fam has achieved many positive achievements in recent times. In the short Dota Pro Circuit 2019-2020 season, they win the right to attend WePlay! Bukovel Minor 2020, placing 3rd as well as a spot at the ESL One Los Angeles Major. Unfortunately, that Major was cancelled.
Geek Fam recounts his journey:
“Our team and management have worked hard to prepare the players for the visa interview. After celebrating our US Visa, we immediately flew to Los Angeles a week before the Major started with all the excitement. We were very excited to practice with the other teams. It is really a big disappointment when the Covid quarantine order in the US was announced just 36 hours before the tournament started. That put us in a corner and the team was forced to fly back within 24 hours of the announcement, with luggage on their shoulders not yet dropped. We said goodbye to the rest of the teams and ESL One LA, and flew home.”
Thank for all the memories that you have given to our DOTA2 Team Fam, We appreciate it.

When everyone had to play online at home, Geek Fam became a formidable opponent in online tournaments held for teams in Asia and Southeast Asia in recent times. The positive achievements of Geek Fam can be mentioned such as reaching 4th place at ESL One Los Angeles online tournament, runner-up ESL SEA Championship 2020, 3rd place in the first season of BTS Pro Series: South East Asia and winning season 2. The One Esports Dota 2 SEA League championship took place in July with a 3-1 result against Fnatic in the final.
ESL One Thailand marked Geek Fam’s last tournament, as the team announced their withdrawal on September 4, 2020. Geek Fam could only explain the simple reason that “it was very difficult for us to continue with the game. TI10 and Dota Pro Circuit as they were delayed indefinitely.”
“The lack of updates on the Dota Pro Circuit so far has forced us to take a break from the Dota 2 division. Once the future of Dota 2 and DPC is clear, we will be back, but until time has passed. At that point, we were forced to say goodbye to the members. With Kuku, Karl, Xepher, Whitemon and even Raven, Ryoya and Dudu. Thank you for being a part of Geek Fam…”
