In response to Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda, Sony fans are calling on the tycoon to also buy another studio to balance the power.
The Microsoft acquisition of Bethesda shook the gaming industry. Therefore, fans of the upcoming PS5 also want Sony to buy a big studio to hit the mark. Whether this move is in Sony’s favor requires further study, but if it has chosen this route, it has a clear choice. Sony has had a pretty close relationship with FromSoftware, similar to Bethesda with Microsoft, and it will likely help the PlayStation family regain its footing against the competition.
For those of you who don’t know, Microsoft now owns ZeniMax, the parent company of Bethesda. The future of Bethesda games is still unknown for the same reason. Some predict many Bethesda games will be exclusive to Xbox. Therefore, Sony fans demanded that they also respond, buying another big studio. Obviously throwing such a lot of money (success or not) is not what Sony will do with the PS5, but it raises the question of which studio is best suited to join Studio. Many people can agree that FromSoftware is that perfect piece.
Relationship between Sony and FromSoftware
FromSoftware and Sony have a long-standing partnership, dating back to Demon’s Souls in 2009 and possibly even before. Although the studio has developed a few games for both Xbox and Nintendo consoles, we can see that the games they release are somewhat favoring Sony. The Dark Souls franchise broke with that practice, launching on both major consoles. But FromSoftware has not stopped with Sony, when the extremely popular Bloodborne game became an exclusive game for PS4.
Now, Demon’s Souls remake, developed by Bluepoint Games, is still a PlayStation exclusive and fans wonder what FromSoftware will prepare next. With the Elden Ring and the possibility of a Bloodborne sequel coming out, fans want to know how FromSoftware will approach the issue of future exclusivity. Given the popularity of the games created by this studio, a wise Sony will exploit the relationship it has already established. And now is the best time to respond to Microsoft’s unexpected Bethesda deal.
Exclusive game release FromSoftware
If Sony takes this bold move, it will be interesting to see how they monopolize some FromSoftware games. Microsoft says it will honor Bethesda’s existing game exclusivity deals, meaning games like Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo will keep PS5/PC exclusivity, but that doesn’t mean Sony will do the same. For example, Elden Ring was originally slated to arrive on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, but it looks like it will now only be released on the next-gen console. If Sony buys FromSoftware, that could change and become a PS5 exclusive.
Even so, PS5 will still release their exclusive games. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War on PS5 will be joining the multiplayer alpha soon. Final Fantasy 16 is also an exclusive game on PS5 and many other titles. Sony doesn’t necessarily have to acquire a major studio to join the race, but doing so will stabilize their position. Let’s wait and see if Sony will have a surprise response.
