Season 8 of Fortnite has begun, bringing a few changes to the map, including a new jungle, a pirate-themed town, and a giant volcano. The game also offers many pirate and ninja themed skins.
However, Fortnite is not the hottest Battle Royale game right now. Apex Legends created a huge fever when it first appeared, reaching more than 50 million players in just the first month of launch. The game was a hit on Twitch, with many popular Fortnite streamers switching over to try out the new game. Epic Games clearly recognizes that trend and tries to attract players with the Overtime Challenge – which rewards you with a free Season 8 Battle Pass if completed on time. Now that Fortnite has met a true Battle Royale rival, let’s compare these two titles together to determine which battle royale suits you better.
Fortnite
Fortnite’s strongest point is that developer Epic Games constantly updates the game, almost weekly. These updates are usually minor bug fixes or weapon tweaks, but sometimes special events (like Thanos from The Avengers), or unique items like the recent Driftboard. Normally, in each Season, Epic introduces new themes or storylines to players. These include meteors falling from the sky, exploding cubes, space cracks.
Fortnite takes care of new players very well. Colorful graphics and characters help appeal to a wider audience, including those who have never played the game. All items use color to gauge rarity, making the game’s loot system easy to understand, while borrowing rarity colors from other popular games. The game’s inventory is also simplified, allowing you to hold a pickaxe and add 5 other items. With inventory always on screen, you don’t have to constantly pop up menus to manage them.
Fortnite is also an easy game to play with friends, allowing you to join them wherever you are. Last year, Fortnite became the first game to support cross-play: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, Mac and even mobile. All game journeys are accessible across platforms. Epic continued to innovate with Fortnite last year with Fortnite Creative, a mode that allows you to create your own island, make your own rules and game modes, and support up to 16 players. These islands can be saved and shared with other players – that makes for a loyal community of creative players.
Regarded as Fortnite’s most successful business model, the Battle Pass is purchasable in the game, allowing you to unlock unique items and challenges. These items have no effect on gameplay. They allow you to decorate your characters and show them off to everyone. Weekly challenges add depth to gameplay, requiring you to focus on certain weapons, or find hidden items in the game. It helps you practice skills that you may not be familiar with. The biggest highlight of the Battle Pass is that if you earn enough of the game’s currency, called the V-Buck, you can buy the next season’s Battle Pass with this virtual currency. The idea of buying something and using it endlessly in later seasons is a great strategy. That’s why Epic made $2.4 billion in revenue from Fortnite last year, more than any other game in history.
One of the most controversial mechanics in Fortnite is the build system. Obviously this sets the game apart from other battle royale games – and defines Fortnite in general – it’s really hard to get used to for new players. The focus of construction is on gathering materials: use your pickaxe and destroy anything on the map – from houses, to vehicles, to walls, everything. Experienced players can efficiently collect them, taking advantage of newer, less active players. Gathering materials is important because they help you create protection for battle, or build stairs to reach higher positions. However, matches are often decided by who builds better than the other – seen as a barrier to new players.
Learning around the map is sometimes difficult. Because of the diverse terrain, you must know how to choose the right place to move so as not to die from a fall from above. Vehicles are also included to make it easier to move, but at the same time a double-edged sword. With the X-4 Stormwing planes in Season 7, many players complained on the forums that it gave them an unfair advantage, forcing Epic to recalibrate their power. Season 8 saw many vehicles leave the game, including the X-4 Stormwing, a supermarket trolley, and an ATK. That means the game now only has Quadcrusher and Driftboard. In general, getting a vehicle right into the game will give you a huge advantage: it turns into a race to hunt the best vehicles, instead of looting or fighting.
Apex Legends
Apex Legends combines Battle Royale with Hero Shooter: allowing you to choose your playstyle and strategy before entering the game. Some characters, known in the game as Legend, use tactical moves such as smoke bombs or dropping bombs from the sky, while others use shields or stealth. Whatever character you choose, you can be sure that each match will play out differently from the last.
Because the game is based on the parkour-style games of Titanfall, the movement in Apex Legends is very smooth. You can move and climb freely, plus the ability to slide, which is perfect for going down hills. Cable cars connect between buildings for convenient transportation. Apex Legends also adds balloons that allow you to fly up and down again. They help you move easily to different locations in a short time – avoid being threatened by the circle. In addition, not losing blood when falling from above is also a plus.

With its unique ping system, Respawn also revolutionizes the way you communicate with teammates in Apex Legends. With just one click, you can mark many interesting points for your teammates, including enemy locations, guns, ammo, equipment, and more. The ability to communicate effectively with each other, whether friends or strangers – without a microphone is one of the best things that has come out of a multiplayer game over the years. Fortnite only introduced the ping system in Season 8, however, it’s not as clear as that of Apex Legends, due to the lack of clear voices of characters when items are marked.
Apex Legends uses the same loot mechanism as traditional Battle Royales like PUBG or Call of Duty’s Blackout. That means weapons you pick up on the ground are “nothing” and have to loot accessories to upgrade guns. That makes the loot system more complicated than in Fortnite: some accessories only apply to certain guns. Fortunately, Apex Legends prioritizes better accessories for your weapons, so that you don’t accidentally replace weaker equipment. Weapons also automatically equip compatible accessories, helping you focus on combat, instead of opening the inventory menu to move back and forth. Weapons also use a color-coded bullet system, making it easy to distinguish what type of ammo you are looking for from a distance.
Unlike other Battle Royale games, Apex Legends gives you more chances to win. If you miss a teammate and can’t recover them in time, you can collect their banner within 90 seconds for a chance to revive them again. By bringing the banner to one of the respawn locations on the map, teammates will have a second chance to fight and increase their chances of victory. But you need to be very careful when respawning, because the character will be completely vulnerable in a few seconds. The ability to revive teammates is a feature that attracts new players: you can ignore your mistake earlier.
With many famous games, hacking is inevitable. While Apex Legends is so new, hacking is already present in the PC market. Until now, Respawn has not used an anti-cheat system in the game, but encourages players to report cheaters on the website, along with in-game videos for the Respawn team to investigate. The game was released a month ago, Respawn banned 16,000 hackers. Since in-game accounts are completely free, nothing can stop them from creating new accounts. Respawn has also previously “banned” hackers in the PC game Titanfall by letting them continue to play, but only in the game full of other hackers. Since there is no reporting system in Apex Legends, hacking will continue to happen, possibly for the worse if Respawn doesn’t fix this issue soon.
Another feature missing from the game is cross-play. The developer said that they plan to adopt cross-play in the future, but also confirmed that the point system and shared purchase across platforms will not happen. This is somewhat disappointing news, given that the games rely heavily on decorations and a point system to unlock features. Commonality is a feature most players want from multiplayer, while still being able to play with friends from different platforms.
For now, Apex Legends looks like it will be racing against Fortnite to see who is the king of battle Royale, as the two titles both offer different unique elements. Apex Legends is about to get its first Battle Pass this March. Let’s wait and see if Apex Legends continues to be a success.
