The Battle Royale genre saw many new games come and go in 2018, but Epic Games’ Fortnite is still standing.
One of the reasons Fortnite has such a large and large fan base is thanks to the enthusiastic support from the developer. In 2018, Fortnite has many LTM modes and many new weapons and unique seasonal events.
2018 can be seen as the year of Fortnite. It’s completely unlike what it was at the beginning of the year, forcing players to constantly adapt and improve.
1. The appearance of 2 new lands
While each season has a few changes on the island of Fortnite, we have two big changes that stand out for the year. The island was previously almost entirely green – until season 5 introduced the desert environment. From there, the famous Paradise Palms were created.
Season 7 takes it a step further with the presence of a snowy area, with three new landmarks, one of which used to be the site of the Infinity Blade. It’s currently unclear what the area will look like after season 7 and winter ends, but with the Ice King castle here, it doesn’t look like it will change anytime soon.
2. Changes to Tilted Towers
Lots of predictions have been made after the teaser images of the change, but nothing has been discussed or hypothesized as much as the destruction of Tilted Towers. Starting in season 3, when the meteorite partially destroyed the Tilted Towers, many hoped this was the location that would be destroyed. That leads to the theory that Kevin the Cube will clean up this place.
Although not actually canceled, Tilted Towers has seen many changes, making it a place where many gamers compete in the game. It was originally added in season 2 but grew larger in season 4 after Season 3’s meteorite. Tilted Towers was gradually rebuilt over the course of season 5, resulting in a new sports shop being present here – that was before when Kevin the Cube rolled over here and ruined the area again (1 week after it was finished). Season 7 is currently building a new building in the area, but its future doesn’t look very promising.
Whether Tilted Towers becomes something else we have to wait and see.
3. Mobility becomes the focus
When Fortnite first launched, a common tactic was to fortress building and entrenchment. This tactic led to the “Just Build LOL” joke about the game, and it was even more condemned by the community when Port-a-Fort was introduced. But gradually, with each season, Fortnite slowly changed the way it fought, changing to a more flexible battle royale game, thanks to the presence of moving items like grapplers and balloons.
Of course, we still have talented architects in the game, but if you are not good at construction, there is still another way to fight. Now we can see the construction professionals going up against the bubble swingers. This is considered one of the memorable changes to refresh Fortnite.
4. The first game to be cross-played
Fortnite’s popularity directly contributed to the cross-play controversy that occurred in 2018. While Sony also cooled down and let Fortnite become the first official game to support cross-play on consoles, this wouldn’t have happened if Fortnite fans hadn’t put pressure on the giant.
This decision created a domino effect, helping to make cross-play support popular in the gaming industry in general.
5. Banner/Battle Star is hidden
When completing the challenges of the week, hunting for Battle Stars is really fun, as they give you a free tier in the Battle Pass. In season 5, by completing challenges you have earned 10 free tiers. Starting in week 2 of season 6, battle royale fans are looking for banners, instead of battle stars. That creates a weekly rotation that continues to the present.
Getting the banner is a cool addition to the collection, but getting only 5 tiers for all that effort doesn’t seem to be enough. Some disagree with this change, but it’s probably meant to slow down those who have already completed the Battle Pass (especially those who completed it early).
6. The appearance of moving vehicles
Back in May, Fortnite added its first vehicle to the game. To some, this was a surprise, but many liked the idea of it being a supermarket trolley. Then we have the All-Terrain Kart (ATK), the Quadcrusher and now the X-4 Storwing, the first plane in the game. They create incredible kills, new ways to move, as well as interact with friends. The presence of planes and vehicles, some cars are no longer as noticeable as before, but that does not mean that they are not worthy of respect in the game.
7. Expansion into the mobile game market
At the beginning of 2018, Fortnite Battle Royale announced its foray into the mobile market, with the iOS version coming out shortly after and Android coming this summer. This decision helped the game dominate everywhere, Fortnite was available on almost every platform at that time. Not to mention, the mobile version also contributes directly to Fortnite’s revenue and popularity. Epic Games says it made $3 billion in 2018.
8. The sky is cracked
In season 4, a giant rocket shot into the air and cracked the sky. In that moment, everyone stopped to watch. This rift leads to many other changes on the island, including portals and the Kevin the Cube event. The rift, along with the season 3 meteor, is one of Fortnite’s most memorable years of the year.
9. Creative/The Block mode
Creative mode, following the success of Playground LTM, was praised by the community in season 7. It allows players to design their own islands. In addition, at The Game Awards 2018, Fortnite also announced that Risky Reels will be replaced by The Block – this space will be a venue for fan creativity.
10. Presence of Leaky Lake
Kevin the Cube appeared midway through season 5, shooting out from a crack in the sky. It moved slowly around the island, changing its gravity and leaving mysterious runes, before coming to a complete stop at Loot Lake.
Many thought this would be the final location of the Cube, but season 6 begins with the cube lifting the house up into the sky, creating a floating island. It gradually roamed the island, collecting runes it had previously generated, before returning to the lake. From there, the final cube was destroyed, with the white screen flashing and butterflies flying around. All of the above events led to the formation of Leaky Lake.
