Sony has just launched a social networking program called “My PS4 Life” – which automatically edits each player’s time history on PlayStation 4 and presents the information in video format. Just log in to your PlayStation account, and in a few minutes, Sony will go over your highlights on PlayStation 4.
Some discerning players have discovered that the data in these videos can be combined, relying on a tropy system to show how many players are in each game.
You can see an example below:
Well no surprise I’ve played a lot of War Thunder just wish I’d made a new account for my son, Dimensions and Minecraft 🙂
Still there’s been some excellent games and I’m sure even more to come@PlayStationUK #MYPS4LIFE pic.twitter.com/zdXztbgd5L— Alabama Shrimp (@alabamashrimp) December 14, 2018
Each video reveals how many players received a trophy type. Sony also released the percentage of players who received each trophy through the PlayStation Network. Figuring out how many people play each game is just an easy math when you have the above two numbers.
As the Reddit post explains. “Here are 33,764 players who achieved the ‘Photo Bomber’ trophy in Fallout 76. And on playstation.com it says 8.3% of players have achieved this number. Simple math: total number of people who played Fallout 76 on PS4 =33.764 x 100%/8.3%= 406,795.”
Fans are collecting videos that show the essentials of each game, and then giving the total number of players. The data isn’t perfect, but it’s possibly the most accurate way we currently have to approximate these numbers.
“The number of players who have won the trophy is not updated online, Sony may have obtained the data between November 20 and December 4,” said Ganestat, a data collection website. “So it doesn’t say too much about recent games.”
Here are the top 19 most popular PlayStation 4 titles, according to the method above, at the time of this data collection:
- Grand Theft Auto 5 (51.7 million)
- FIFA 18 (32.5 million)
- FIFA 17 (30 millions)
- FIFA 16 (28.3 million)
- Minecraft (25.6 million)
- Call of Duty: WWII (24.6 million)
- Rocket League (22.6 million)
- FIFA 15 (19.2 million)
- Fortnite (16.2 million in Europe and Australia)
- The Last of Us Remastered (15.9 million)
However, this ranking also has some shortcomings. The game will not be counted if no video exists, or is found, to include information about the game. This means that Gamestat only tracks a limited number of games, and this number is sure to grow as more videos are found. For example, Fortnite above doesn’t cover all regions so it would be much higher on the list if we had enough information.
The above information is interesting because the above list somewhat shows the number of players on PS4, but it is not the most comprehensive.
