Facebook has become the latest tech giant to enter the gaming space cloud games when announcing that Facebook Gaming launched a number of cloud titles available on Facebook’s web browser and apps.
Previous cloud gaming services provided by Google Stadia, Amazon Luna and xCloud of the Microsoft (now xCloud is part of Game Pass Ultimate). However, Facebook’s new service didn’t have a grand launch, but just an added feature of Facebook Gaming. This isn’t the only way Facebook is trying to break with the tradition of cloud gaming.
Facebook VP Jason Rubin wrote in the blog post that he “will talk openly from the start” because “news about cloud gaming is prone to hype”. After learning from the mistakes of similar services, which have been criticized for “making promises” beyond their means — Facebook intends to take it slow, initially focusing on mobile gaming with limited genre. The new service is only in beta, and the plan is for a selection of games that are likely to expand in the coming months.
However, the big draw of the new service on Facebook Gaming when compared to its competitors is that all the games are free (at least for now). Users can make in-app purchases from the get-go at no extra cost. Rubin emphasized that Facebook’s game service is built on a web gaming platform, so it’s no surprise when titles come out (namely Asphalt 9: Legends, Mobile Legends: Adventure, PGA TOUR Golf Shootout) , Solitaire: Arthur’s Tale, WWE SuperCard and Dirt Bike Unchained) have many similarities compared to the former.
The announcement about Facebook’s cloud gaming service was announced just hours after the issue of account bans related to users of Oculus 2 glasses was resolved. Facebook Gaming’s new service is being tested in the US at the moment in California, Texas and a few other states. Facebook currently plans to expand the service across the entire US territory, but there are no details yet on a global release of the service.
