Just released last weekend, Little Nightmares II does not disappoint horror fans when it brings a multitude of emotions to the player, there is tension, there is fear, there are disappointments, regrets, and curiosity. Little Nightmares II is still known to everyone as part 2 of the series, but considering the plot and the events that take place at the end, is this a sequel, prequel or a completely separate story? It’s time we discuss this together a bit and again, the article has a lot of spoilers, if you don’t want to ruin the first experience, please consider.
Unlike the first part, Little Nightmares II introduces players to the character Mono – a boy who has a hobby of wearing oversized hats on his head along with the ability to use heavy objects such as hammers, axes and pipes. In fact, Mono also possesses another special ability and has been revealed from the very first scenes, only very few gamers can recognize at that time. We meet Mono when he wakes up bewilderedly in the middle of a dark forest on the outskirts of Pale city, inhabited by a ferocious Hunter with a shotgun. At this point, we see Mono sitting next to a powered off TV. Of course, it’s no coincidence, everything that appears in this world has a hidden meaning and so is this TV. It is what is linked to Mono’s special ability, but as mentioned, the player will not know until later.
The truth is that Mono or even Six can move from one location to another through the TV screen. It was the TVs hanging over Pale City that many times saved Mono from imminent danger. However, that ability is definitely related to the Transmission or the Signal Tower, a tower used to transmit scary signals to the people. Simply put, it is a form of mental manipulation, even some people would rather commit suicide than not continue to watch the glowing screens and listen to the soothing sounds from them. It is used as a minion of Tall Man to suck souls, the ultimate goal is to rule the whole world.
In addition to Mono’s special abilities, the ending also reveals that Tall Man doesn’t seem to be the main villain as we thought. Speaking of which, those who haven’t played the game will be surprised. To explain why, we continue to learn about the relationship between Mono and Six – the main character from the first game.
Back when Mono woke up and roamed around the forest, he then sneaked into a shack, squalid – the whereabouts of the Hunter. There, Mono finds Six and frees her from the basement. From there, Mono has another companion in this scary world. Together, the two face and experience many horrors, disgusting monsters in schools, hospitals, in Pale city. Although they are strangers accidentally meeting each other, it is these things that make Mono and Six more and more attached and trust each other. They are together like a picture with a shadow and of course, there are times when Six and Mono are forced to separate because Six is kidnapped but Mono always appears in time and in the end, the two survive together before every difficulty.
When Tall Man captures Six, Mono tries to rescue her, despite the danger of his life confronting Tall Man and storming the Signal Tower. Even after escaping from Tall Man, Mono once again saved Six’s life when she was manipulated into a giant monster. But, the tower collapsed, Mono fell. At the moment of life and death, Six caught Mono and… let go of his hand to let him fall.
Loss, surprise, heartache are the emotions of players at this time. After everything they’ve been through, a long time in spite of danger to save each other’s lives, why would Six choose to betray Mono?
The first explanation, Little Nightmares II is a prequel to the original game. As we all know, Mono does not appear in Little Nightmares, where only Six is alone because Mono has been left behind by Six. The second explanation seems more conspiracy theory, it seems that Six can foresee something unusual in Mono, that Mono and Tall Man are both tied by the fact that Mono eventually chooses to become a monster. Tall Man-like vest. After all, Six’s betrayal, because of her fear, selfishness, or something else? No one knows the exact answer.
If Little Nightmares is a story about Six’s personality transformation when faced with extreme hunger, Little Nightmares II is warmer when it comes to the two characters’ teenage feelings. Fate allowed Mono to meet Six and be together all the way, but just at the moment when it seemed like hope opened, Six’s letting go had extinguished everything. The feeling of safety at eye level and in the end everything is crushed by the hands of the person you trust the most is really too cruel, cruel to both the character and the player.
Even if she blames someone, there are also people who defend Six, maybe she has a difficult reason to say leading to such a decision. Will Six and Mono end up working together to save the world or will they face each other in the final battle? Or is there also the possibility that another “final boss” will appear in this story? An open ending would probably be the perfect start for the third part of the series to continue in development.
