It’s been five years since Gearbox released Borderlands 2, a game loved by critics and players alike. We wouldn’t be surprised if Borderlands 3 appeared in the future. Borderlands 3 may not be confirmed at this point but most people assume the title is probably in production.
It makes sense if Gearbox develops a sequel to this quality game. Not only that, the development team also gives strong suggestions that you can read right here.
Release date
The fact that Borderlands 3 is in development has yet to be confirmed, so it’s not surprising that Gearbox hasn’t set a release date yet.
However, based on the content of an investor’s call, the release date is most likely to range from October 2018 to September 2019. During the call, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said that, a “highly anticipated game from one of 2K’s biggest franchises” is in development for the 2019 financial year, which runs from October 2018 to September 2019.
Although Borderlands 3 is not directly mentioned, it is clearly the most suitable candidate for the “anticipated game” based on an already existing 2K franchise. Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 was out before that time, and Gearbox had said another Borderlands product would be on the way as well.
News and rumors
Borderlands 3 is a name that has never been confirmed by Gearbox to be real. But there have been plenty of hints coming from Gearbox over the years that make us feel pretty confident and more looking forward to Borderlands 3.
Flamethrowers
A recent interaction between Randy Pitchford and Elon Musk has added weight behind rumors that the next Borderlands version is still in development.
After Tesla CEO and South African billionaire Elon Musk launched the mask flamethrowers titled Boring Company, which was sold as a prize to the community for the purchase of 50,000 hats, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford contacted and expressed interest in bringing the flamethrower on.”a Borderlands game “.
To everyone’s surprise, Musk agreed to this bizarre request to make the Boring Company Flamethrower the first confirmed weapon in a game…not even confirmed.
Elon – I’m going to add this to our next Borderlands game. Super serious. Let me know if you want to write the flavor text. You may have already done so – we’ll just lift it from one of your tweets.

PAX West 2017
At PAX West in 2017, Pitchford announced in a meeting that 90% of Gearbox’s people were “doing what most of you want us to do.”
That is almost synonymous with him admitting that since most of the audience present are fans of Borderlands, these are obviously pretty obvious suggestions even though Borderlands 3 is still a name that has not been mentioned.
Interview with IGN
Around the same time, Pitchford participated in an IGN Unfiltered interview in which he said there would be one more Borderlands game, and that it would certainly be a true sequel.
Pitchford stated that Gearbox’s next game would be a “really big and worthy” step forward in the series, adding: “if we’re doing something, that’s it” to bring down The level of certainty of the game we are expecting has dropped a notch.
Mischievous Tweets
In April 2017, Pitchford took to Twitter to post a photo of himself in a bodysuit for motion capture with playful captions: “Fitching a scene… I could very well be a psychopath in the movie. video game titles we might be building. By the way, congratulations on the release of Bulletstorm!”
Doing a shoot… I may or may not be a psycho bandit in a video game we may or may not be working on. Also, happy Bulletstorm launch day! pic.twitter.com/5X9ZzC6kdJ

Presentation of GDC
In light of the foregoing, Pitchford took the stage during an Epic Games Unreal show at GDC in March 2017, and he introduced a new rendering technology that “can be used in a game.” Gearbox games in the future.” He said the footage wasn’t from the video game but what was shown was reminiscent of Borderlands. He also said that the footage was not taken from a video game, but that the footage was very reminiscent of Borderlands.
He also revealed that this new technology is capable of simulating different physical details depending on the characteristics of each planet. Specifically, he said, “there could be different physical effects, the sun and moon could also be in different positions than the sun and moon on Pandora with which we are familiar.”
This is not only a clear hint that Borderlands 3 is in development, but also shows that we may be experiencing completely new technologies and settings.
PAX East panel
You’ll notice Randy Pitchford has had a lot of hints about Borderlands 3 since April 2016. During the PAX East event, he gave the most obvious hint that Borderlands 3 is in development.
On Twitter, he also revealed that Battleborn art director Scott Kester will become Borderlands 3’s art director.
However, he did say that the name of the game is unlikely to be Borderlands 3: “We haven’t even decided on a specific name for it yet. We can call it Borderlands 4 for all we know.”
Some changes
However, if the Borderlands 3 project is underway, there may still be many changes compared to the previous two games. The first difference is that author Mikey Neumann will not be able to participate, sadly when he is forced to resign due to health reasons. Borderlands 2 screenwriter Anthony Burch has also left the company, it is unknown who will take the pen after they leave.
Another change is that Claptrap voice actor David Eddings has left Gearbox to move to Rooster Teeth, there’s a good chance someone else will take over the role instead.
