Epic Games Store “burns” more than 10000 billion to compete with Steam

Epic Games Store won’t stop until it catches up with Steam.

Over the past two years, the game distribution market in the world has witnessed a fierce competition between Steam and Epic Games Store.

Epic Games Store – with the position of a latecomer, used an extremely powerful strategy to turn off the blow. It is shaking hands and creating close relationships with a lot of big game developers. To be able to negotiate with manufacturers in releasing exclusive games on the Epic Store, in addition to minimizing service fees, the platform also uses a “pawn” to convince partners. This amount is called the “exclusive fee”, which is passed on to the manufacturers by the Epic Store without regard to the game’s sales.

Because of this decision, the manufacturers are so suitable to cooperate with the Epic Games Store. In addition to a very cheap service fee of only 12% (with Steam it will be 30%), Epic partners will receive an additional exclusive fee. In terms of total revenue, the cooperation with Epic Store will bring a lot of profit if compared to Steam or other platforms. This is the main reason why many game developers have not hesitated to “oust” Steam to “return to the Epic Games Store team”.

Over the past 2 years, Epic Games Store has made exclusive publishing contracts with more than 100 games. In which, in 2020 alone, they spent about 444 million USD (~ more than 10,000 billion VND) to pay for manufacturers willing to turn away from Steam. This is really a huge number that few publishing portals can withstand, except for the Epic Games Store.

Of course, the father of Fortnite will not stop at $ 444 million. With the goal of dominating the market, they will not give up their way, at least in the next few years. With huge financial backing from Tencent (accounting for 40% of the shares), Epic Games will definitely “dry blood” with Steam until it achieves its new goal.
