For Fortnite fans who have been waiting for the sub-region matchmaking feature, it has now been updated. Epic Games has provided more details on their progress and answered many questions surrounding this change.
The first data centers already support this feature with Singapore being the first. Europe and East-North America have also received this update.
The goal is to allow “per region players to automatically connect to the data center to give them the best network experience,” the post reads.

Sub-region Matchmaking
Hi!
We covered development in August on sub-region matchmaking. We’ll be enabling this feature in Asia in September and have just added it in Europe and North-Eastern America. You can read the link above for technical details and below for more information
What is sub-region matchmaking?
This is a new feature we’ve adopted to find the data centers available in your area, determine the best transmission, then match you to the location that gives you the best connection. Depending on your location, players will experience varying improvements in ping and network connection quality.
When will this feature be available?
On September 10, we launched the Singapore data center and applied the algorithm to allow sub-region matchmaking. We recently added Europe and North-Eastern America to use this feature.
Will I be able to connect to the nearest sub-region?
No. In the event that the number of players on the list is not enough to guarantee the time to find the match, it will not apply. In these cases, the player will be defaulted to the “main” data center for that region. So if you will probably notice a difference in network conditions during a match if your ping is better at “Location A” than “Location B”, depending on the time of day, the system playing, and the list you choose. We’ll be monitoring this feature closely and tweaking to find a balance between network quality and matchmaking wait times.
What if I’m in a party?
When in party, if you are in an area where sub-region matchmaking is supported, it will prioritize the location of the party owner first.
What is the goal of Epic Games?
The ultimate goal for sub-region matchmaking is to allow players of each region to automatically connect to the data center to give them the best experience.
As we expand this feature to other regions, we will further improve service for areas that are not well supported to optimize the experience for players in regions that are not located near data centers. Whether. We will continue to identify which regions benefit most from the addition of data centers and update you with new locations as they are added.
Please continue to provide feedback on this feature and share your thoughts.
