E3 2019 is over. The event brings a lot of new games, including promising horror games. While Capcom hasn’t made any new announcements, the horror genre is a bit underwhelming compared to last year, but we still have some impressive names.
Specifically, there are 8 horror games featured at E3 2019.
Blair Witch
One of the biggest surprises at Microsoft’s E3 2019 was the presence of the Blair Waitch game. Based on a successful horror series, Blair Witch was developed by Bloober Team, the studio with horror hits like Layers of Fear and Observer. As a first-person psychological horror game, Blair Witch will continue the tradition of the games above, and make it even better. Horror fans will be able to play the game on August 30.
Carrion
E3 2019 gives us a new look at the “backward horror” Carrion game, where players will play the role of monsters. Maybe this will make the game less scary, but it has no shortage of offensive images, combined with the gloomy atmosphere of the game. Let’s wait and see what the final product will be, and whether the concept of “reverse horror” will be expanded.
Dying Light 2
Dying Light 2 appeared at many E3 2019 press conferences, with a focus on parkour and terrifying zombie hordes. In addition to Dying Light 2 coming out in spring 2020, we also know that this game will focus more on player choice. Specifically, the developer estimates that the first playthrough in Dying Light 2 will only show the player about half of the game’s content.
GhostWire: Tokyo
Shinji Mikami said he will attend E3 2019, but no one knows what his next project will be. Instead of announcing another Evil Within game at Bethesda’s press conference, Mikami introduced GhostWire: Tokyo, which is directed by the passionate Ikumi Nakamura. We’ve only seen the game’s cinematic trailer, but from what we’ve seen, GhostWire: Tokyo looks scary. With Tango Gameworks in charge of production, the game is sure to please horror fans.
Rainbow Six Quarantine
With the success of Rainbow Six Siege, it’s hard to believe that the R6 franchise is back on PvE. Instead of bringing the tactical shooting experience of Rainbow Six, Rainbow Six Quarantine will incorporate more horror elements into it.
The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan
Supermassive Games launched the horror game village with the exclusive PS4 product, Until Dawn. Despite being delayed several times and being PlayStation Move-only at first, Until Dawn surpassed all expectations in 2016 and remains one of the best horror games of the past few years. Supermassive has continued to launch horror games since its success Until Dawn, but none as ambitious as yet The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan.
Like Until Dawn with a few Hollywood stars, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan also apply the same way. Shawn Ashmore will take on one of the lead roles alongside Pip Torrens. The first game in the horror series, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan will have gameplay similar to Until Dawn, but set on a ghost ship with a new cast of characters. The game will bring a horror experience this August 30.
The Sinking City
Expected to launch last March, but The Sinking City was delayed to June 27. E3 2019 was the last chance for the game to be introduced before the official launch. The Sinking City appeared in the Katherine Funny Games Showcase. The Sinking City combines detective gameplay like in the Sherlock Holmes series with Lovecraftian horror elements. The Sinking City launches at the end of this June, so horror fans won’t have to wait long to see if the game has the potential it promises.
Undying
As for the indie horror game, one of the attractive games at this E3 is Undying. As a new effort by studio Vanimals, players control a mother and child on a journey to survive a zombie apocalypse. Although the zombie genre is not lacking, the mother/child element in Undying is slightly different. Not to mention, the drawing in the game helps the game stand out from other names.
In addition to the eight horror games mentioned above, there are two more games that are also worth mentioning, but they are not exactly in the “horror” genre. One is 12 Minutes, tells the story of a man who is trapped in a time loop when he has to constantly re-enact his death. It’s not purely horror, but it’s still one of the standout trailers at E3 2019.
Nintendo Switch’s Luigi’s Mansion 3 is also worth noting. Luigi’s Mansion 3 doesn’t scare anyone, but the series has always delivered horror-oriented puzzle gameplay, and the game’s newest installment will be no exception.
