Dota 2: Learn how armor works and promote its effectiveness

Dota Armor 2

The mechanics in Dota have always been an interesting topic. Gaining in-game knowledge doesn’t mean your skills will be better, but it does help players make clearer decisions, sometimes out of tough situations.

Armor plus and minus armor

Armor subtraction has the same calculation mechanism as armor addition, but in the opposite direction. That is, if you lose 5 armor, your additional physical damage will increase by about 25% (while adding 5 armor will reduce your physical damage by 25%). The higher the armor value, the less effective the armor is. You can refer to the armor spreadsheet for more details.

But memorizing all these numbers is not practical at all, so the article has simplified down to 5 numbers for you to memorize. They are only approximations, but will greatly help in the decision-making process.

  • Add 5 armor reduce about 25% Physical damage and armor subtraction deal 25% more physical damage. 1/4 damage dealt will be reduced or increased.
  • Add 9 armor reduce about 33% Physical damage and armor reduction deal 33% more physical damage. 1/3 of damage dealt will be reduced or increased.
  • Add 16 armor reduce about 50% Physical damage and armor subtraction deal 50% more physical damage. Half the damage dealt will be reduced or increased.
  • Add 30 armor reduce about 66% Physical damage and armor subtraction deal 66% more physical damage. 2/3 damage dealt will be reduced or increased.
  • Add 42 armor reduce about 75% Physical damage and de-armor will deal 75% more physical damage. 3/4 damage dealt will be reduced or increased.

The above information is simple enough for you to remember and use in the game when calculating the amount of damage needed to finish off an opponent or how much more damage will be done by subtracting armor.

When is armor subtraction really good?

In the article on thyroid analysis in the previous period, we divided into two segments: “high value” from 20 or less and “low value” from 20 and up.

In general, the armor reduction effect is best when they completely remove the enemy’s armor and push the value down to a negative number. For example, in the case of Slardar, when casting a level 3 Corrosive Haze on an object with 10 armor, the percentage of physical damage will be changed from 62.32% up the city 137.68% – change near 75%.

If Corrsive Haze is cast on an object with 42 armor, physical damage percentage will be changed from 25.10% up 41.51%. In this case, the difference is not too much, only about 16%.

Therefore, we understand that when facing heroes with high armor (like Morphling, Terrorblade, Naga), the armor reduction effect is not really effective. You should understand that subtracting armor will not help you deal high physical damage to these objects.

Example: Elder Titan and Drow Ranger combos

  • Base Armor is only armor from Agility plus Initial Armor stat, not counting bonus armor from items like Chainmail or Platemail.

There are two heroes in the game that now have the ability to remove or deplete the enemy’s base armor. Elder Titan has a Natural Order aura, while Drow penetrates basic armor with Marksmanship.

Natural Order calculates how much base armor the target has and then subtracts the equivalent armor from the target’s total armor. That is, items like Desolator, Assault Cuirass, Medallion of Courage or Solar Crest will fully work with armor minus aura. Specifically, they will cut straight “high value” or push enemy armor to negative.

Example: The opponent has 20 Base Armor and 5 Bonus Armor, for a total of 25 Armor. Under the effects of Medallion of Courage and aura Natural Order, the hero’s total 25 armor will be deducted by 20 from the aura effect and by 7 from the Medallion effect, for a total of minus 2 armor.

Example: The opponent has 25 Base Armor and 10 bonus armor, for a total of 35 armor. If attacked by a Drow Ranger with a Desolator, the damage when jumping the Marksmanship number will be calculated as if the opponent had 3 armor left: 35 (total armor) – 25 (base armor deducted by Marksmanship) – 7 (by Desolator effect).

Now let’s move on to the fun part of this combo. The actual Elder Titan + Drow Ranger might not be very effective, but it’s still fun. Because of the way Dota is programmed, the game allows the effects of Drow Ranger and Elder Titan to stack together.

That is, opponents hit with Natural Order will have their base armor deducted first And after thatMarksmanship when activated will subtract base armor value one more time when calculating damage.

In fact, the opponent’s base armor will damage himself. Hero has 42 armor Basically, when you get Marksmanship, it will be counted as minus 42 armorie percentage of damage taken changed from 25% luxurious 175%. Or to put it more simply, it increases 7 times more amount of damage inflicted. Not to mention the 120 bonus physical damage also benefits a lot from the armor reduction. With a 50% chance of happening.

It is difficult to say when these two heroes will combine as the theory mentioned above. Practically speaking, Elder Titan is not being used much right now, while Drow is also not as popular and powerful as the previous patch. But that doesn’t mean the duo won’t be able to appear. When this combo is used, you will see the enemy lose blood unbelievably fast.
