Patch Dota 2 7.20 is out on November 19 and has a lot of changes. But most of the time it’s just redoing moves. A total of 36 heroes have been remade and SvenRogue Knight is among them. Sven and Dragon Knight are the default high armor strength heroes and are the reason Sven against heroes like Bristleback, help Sven duel with him. But Warcry was changed to increase movement speed and health shield instead of armor. While it looks appealing at first, it’s not as powerful as you might think. Now, Sven can’t stand to fight. That signals the end of the hero’s carry safeland period.
Sven formerly always played as position 1 in the professional arena. Sometimes, teams pick support Sven (like Virtus.Pro), but that doesn’t happen often. However, after 7.06, Sven nerfed to the point of complete loss of the ball last season. Out of a total of 4345 professional matches that took place from 7.07 to the end of 7.19, Sven was picked 155 times and banned 111 times, giving us a total of 266 matches competed in the whole year. This number is terrible and IceFrog has not adjusted yet Sven good in 7.20 just recently.
Despite being remade, Sven disappeared again
Since Dota 2 7.20 came out, the win rate and pick of Sven plunge. The win rate used to be above 50% before 7.20 and now it is completely below the 50% line. If we just look at the Divine and Immortal ranks, the pick rate is 2.09% with a win rate of 47.09%. This is a failure. In the first week of 7.20 launch, 101 professional matches were recorded by datdota and according to what the data shows: Sven got picked 0 matches and got banned, as you guessed it, also 0 matches. So what happened? Why Sven worse than before. The skill comparison table will give us the answer.
Old Warcry:
Grants 5/10/15/20 armor to nearby allies (including creeps) for 8 seconds
Cooldown: 35/30/25/20
Warcry after 7.20:
Grants you and nearby allied heroes bonus Movement Speed and health shield that blocks attacks based on the shield’s health (blocking damage counts after armor reduction).
Lasts 10 seconds. The buff ends if the shield is used up.
Movement Speed: 8/12/16/20% Movement Speed.
Shield Health: 110/220/330/440 Health.
AOE: 700.
Cooldown: 36/32/28/24.
Mana cost: 40
Old Warcry plus cho Sven lots of armor. The new Warcry does protect Sven from any damage, but that’s not what Sven need. Aside from not having extra armor, one of the items that Sven Right up is Mask of Madness (also gets nerf for 10 damage reduction) which has 8 armor reduction active.
MASK OF MADNESS:
Grants 110 attack speed and 12% movement speed, but reduces armor by 8 and silences itself. Lasts 8 seconds.
Cooldown: 22.
Sven not only 20 armor less than before, but also lose 8 more armor I have. maybe Sven will avoid getting nuke in the first place compared to before, but the extra 440 HP is really worse. Let’s compare Sven and Phantom Assassin have what in 20 minutes into the game, assuming both play well.
General, Sven have better stats (but Sven than PA 2 levels in the picture above). But when the two sides fought, the armor of Sven (11) will be reduced to -4 due to his Mask of Madness and the Desolator from PA. i.e Sven will take 1.2x extra damage. The PA has 186 damage. Two to three hits is what the PA needs to remove the Warcry shield. Then it’s time to chop Sven and we haven’t counted PA’s crit and dodge yet.
If the old Warcry still exists, Sven will have +16 Armor immediately after being de-armored, ie against 50% physical damage. PA’s each hit (186 damage) if dealt 223 (due to negative armor) will only deal 93 damage before! PA will need 2.5 times the amount of attack to kill Svenin that time, Sven can flee to safety or fight back. The armor chart below shows the difference in damage multiplier received between the two scenarios. Armor is now more resistant to physical damage, but conversely, minus armor increases damage taken more than before.
Health (EHP) with old Warcry is: 4944
Health with new Warcry is 2912
Warcry being remade is quite confusing.
Not all heroes go to Desolator. But almost every carry has 150-200 damage at this point in the game and having a health shield doesn’t help much. Sven Unlike other carries that can fight early game, this hero needs some basic equipment to farm. Extra armor makes farming better. However, it can also be done with a blood shield.
The meta is getting faster and faster, and unlike the games in 7.19, 7.20 usually ends around 30 minutes. In the fast meta, heroes need to farm for a long time and can be easily killed by enemy carry or mid won’t be picked much. Sven can be core in games where the team wins all three lanes, but it’s hard to wait Sven farm enough. In fact, no one even considered Sven the carry is fine too. We’ve probably lost one of the strongest carries in Dota 2 history.
What helps Sven that shines in 7.20 is Warcry which makes playing in a better support position. 440HP Health Shield and 20% Movement Speed for the whole team can make a big difference in the early stages of combat. It benefits teammates with high armor. However, in the support role, two moves: Grea Cleave and God Strength don’t help much. As the meta settles down, we could see position 4, maybe position 3 Sven, but with the changes in 7.20, let’s hope Warcry returns to the way it was.
