The community’s first impression of Sven in 7.20 was not very good. With the cleave structure changed in the same year without success, this hero was quickly seen as not worth playing. However, recent trends paint a different picture – the hero is currently winning more than 53% of his games in the top tier. Today, we’re going to dig deeper and find out why Sven is stronger than expected.
NEW WARCRY
Sven deals a lot of damage and farms super fast – those are two aspects of Sven that have remained constant over the years. However, players know how to ‘slug’ Sven, avoid fighting with Sven when his ultimate is active, and don’t shrink to avoid getting hit by the council. Patches and meta have not mentioned Sven in the past year, only the skills of the players have increased.
The Warcry remake tries to change this and almost succeeds. First impressions of the new Warcry is that it can be used against Tinker, since you can enter the March of the Machines and still use the Blink Dagger, plus the same benefits for teammates.
There are many heroes in the current meta that possess ranged skills that are enough to prevent opponents from starting a fight with Blink Dagger. Keeping you and your team flexible is something that cannot be underestimated. Warcry can take opponents by surprise, at least for the time being, if they’re not familiar with Sven Warcry.
With a 24 second cooldown, it’s usually used twice in teamfights and that means you can use Warcry to prevent Blink Dagger from deactivating after initiating a fight, when you’re surrounded by enemies. It can be used to escape in a bad situation or counterattack. With a hero completely dependent on approaching the enemy, the new Warcry seems hard to replace.
THE PROBLEM IS SOLVED
Sven’s main problem, not reaching the enemy, has been somewhat solved. That’s why this hero is favored again, however, Sven’s cleave may be nerfed. But how much nerf is still a matter of consideration.
We all know and remember that Sven could completely wipe out an entire opposing team in just a few hits, if they weren’t in the right position. But with good gamers, does this happen often?!
With the ability to choose standing positions improved over the years, to the point where Black Hole or Reverse Polarity 3 people are also considered good. Even Echo Slam, this skill has value because it doesn’t take much time to cast, instead of the massive amount of damage it can deal. Dota gamers are now smarter, faster, and understand the importance of standing better, at least in the high ranks and pro arena.

Jungle creep doesn’t have much armor, so Sven has almost no difficulty in farming stacks. That means Sven gets to Blink Dagger and Black King Bar faster, as long as the team’s support stacks the hero. From there, Sven can gank faster, creating space for the team as well as for himself – farming and killing heroes is what Sven is best at.
With the extra teleport holder slot and the backpack ensure that this hero really takes advantage of all 6 slots without wasting any space. Using the Moon Shard is also an option worth considering – maximum DPS (damage per second) can be achieved when the damage value and attack speed both increase.
From there, we have a hero that farm fast, holds the tempo of the game, can create space for himself. In addition, Sven also creates additional safety for supports, allowing teammates to continue to disable or harass the opponent, so that Sven is ready to rush out to eat.
EPILOGUE
When 7.20 was released, everyone thought that Sven could not be revived. But what we see is that Sven is getting more and more popular and really effective in the game. That means Dota 2 also has heroes that may have been overlooked, not fully exploited. But that will soon be clear in the tournaments earlier this year.
