A few days ago, ESL and Valve announced that ESL One LA was canceled due to the Covid-19 epidemic. Now, Valve says the season’s 4th DPC Major and Minor (Epicenter Major and DOTA PIT Minor) will also be canceled due to health concerns with event attendees.
With only two Majors and Minors taking place before the virus spread, this left Dota 2 with exactly one final set of Major and Minor – originally planned to be the 5th set of the year. Valve added that it is rethinking its approach to these events. The Minor is scheduled to premiere June 6-13 and the Major, ONE Esports Singapre Major, is scheduled for June 20-28.
Whether the time will be kept as original, no one can say in advance. It is still too early to predict when the 5th Major will take place, as everything depends on the situation of the Covid-19 epidemic in the next few weeks.
With two Majors canceled, not to mention TI10 will take place, this year’s DPC system will depend on exactly three DPC Major and Minor. Valve will have to change the rules of participation to ensure fairness for the teams at The 10th International. Ben “Noxville” Steenhuisen has come up with an interesting solution to this problem.
Follow me:
- Directly invite the top 7 current teams (TNC/Vici/Secret/EG/IG/Alliance/Liquid)
- Open regional qualifiers (one slot per region: total of 6 teams)
- Open ticket tournament for 6 teams (1 per region), with the top 3 will win the right to participate in TI
And what Valve will do is currently unclear. It is quite obvious that this season DPC has been greatly affected by Covid-19. Therefore, people need to be careful about hygiene and not gather in crowded places to reduce the risk of this virus epidemic.
