A lot of changes took place in patch 7.23 of Dota, including the remastered 26 Aghanim’s Scepter. Already have a review of 16 new Scepters for core heroes. Here is a review of 10 support heroes that have been remade Scepter. Many of these heroes can be played as cores (Clockwerk, Enchantress, Dazzle, Pudge and sometimes even Ancient Apparition), but they’re more of a support play. In this section, we’ll see how supports take advantage of the new Scepter.
1. Ancient Apparition (6/10)
Chilling Touch has no cooldown.
Chilling Touch cooldown reduced from 3 seconds to 0 seconds. Chilling Touch grants Ancient Apparition 170 magic damage (250 with talent) and an additional 240 range. So upgrading to Aghanim’s Scepter seems like a good idea? That’s not true for two reasons. AA mainly plays in support, so building support items is prioritized over Scepter. It also requires 90 mana per hit, so unless you have plenty of mana, you will run out of mana very quickly. So when will the Scepter take effect? If playing AA mid – as we have seen WOMAN[o]one, Sumail and Dendi to use in the professional arena – this is a great item to add damage. And if you play support AA, changing this Scepter is also good because you don’t need to build this item in every game. Ancient Apparition used to be one of the few heroes that had to be on Scepter before patch 7.23. So, you often see pro players on Hand of Midas and Scepter. Now that’s gone, AA can focus on other items to help the team.
2. Clockwerk (6/10)
Add the Overclocking skill, all skills expire on cooldown and grant you 40% bonus Movement Speed and +200 Attack Speed for 8 seconds. After this time ends, you will be stunned for 4 seconds. Cooldown: 60, Manacost: 150.
Note: Stun after Overclock is over cannot be prevented even with Black King Bar enabled. Even if Clockwerk casts Eul’s right before the Overclock ends, the hero is still stunned upon landing. This stun cannot be dispel by basic dispel. It requires strong dispel to negate the self-stun effect from Overclocking.
Perhaps the best thing about Clockwerk this time is the Hookshot cooldown reduced from 40 seconds to 30 seconds. While it’s not as powerful as the old Scepter (12 seconds), it’s short enough for the Clock to have an effect without having to hit the Scepter. Overclocking only exhausts the cooldown of skills, not items, plus the movement speed and Hookshot can be used to chase or escape from enemies. However, its disadvantage lies in the stun, as mentioned above, it cannot be reversed by Eul’s or BKB. It can only be dispel with strong dispel, so any mistake from Clock can bind itself for enemies to hit. Overclocking costs 150 mana, so using all 4 moves with Overclocking costs a total of 530 mana. Once used, mana will not regenerate meaning Clock may no longer have mana to use. Soul Ring is a must-have item when you go to Scepter. Clockwerk was one of three heroes not picked at TI9 (alongside KotL and Ursa) and when he switched from patch 7.22 to 7.23, Clockwerk was picked only 16 times in 473 pro games (8 wins, 8 losses). It must be said that the change of Clock in 7.23 was not enough to help any hero become strong again, even including the new Aghanim’s Scepter.
3. Elder Titan (6/10)
Now gives you Spell Immunity when Astral Spirit returns, based on the number of heroes hit. Add 2 seconds for each hero.
Read the description of the Scepter in patch 7.22 before we delve into the new Scepter.
Patch 7.22 Elder Titan: Echo Stomp now grants you Spell Immunity while channeling and adds 2 seconds for each hero hit.
The old Scepter always made sure ET could land an Echo Stomp unless the opponent had something piercing Spell Immunity to stop it. Sticking to the Echo Stomp usually means the Earth Splitter will also hit. The new Scepter only grants Spell Immunity when Astral Spirit returns to ET, not when you’re Echo Stomp. The old Scepter is clearly better for ET support. It can be used well in pubs, with core ET, but in professional games it is difficult to popularize.
Note: Elder Titan’s Echo Stomp deals physical damage while Astral Spirit’s Echo Stomp deals magic damage.
4. Vengeful Spirit (6/10)
Nether Swap now causes enemies to fear where you landed with 700 unit range for 2 seconds.
This is the controversial change of Vengeful Spirit. A lot of gamers believe this is a good Scepter, but pro players think otherwise. To give you an idea, Vengeful Spirit was picked 119 times in the pro games of patch 7.23, and only 3 times Aghanim’s Scepter was purchased. Don’t get me wrong, this is not a weak Scepter, but its usefulness is rather limited. The most obvious good scenario one can think of is Roshan – if he has vision, Swap the enemy hero out and cause his teammates to run away. It can also be good to start teamfight when both teams are clustered. But in a situation where there are no enemy heroes nearby, we are wasting a 4200 gold item. The Nether Swap works just like the Scepter in this case. What is the advantage of VS in patch 7.23? The old Scepter is now a level 25 talent, after death VS’s shadow can be cast (much more useful than the current Scepter), so this hero doesn’t need to be Scepter anymore.
5. Enchantress (7/10)
Added Sproink, knocking you back 400 units and dodging projectiles. Cooldown: 3 seconds, Manacost: 50.
Enchantress’ old Scepter used to be a must-have item for maximum damage, but now it’s not. Whether or not there is a new Scepter depends on many things, but in the game when the opponent has a lot of projectile skills, it will bring quite a lot of benefits. The biggest advantage is the short cooldown and low mana. The disadvantage is that it pushes you back, making it a bit difficult to use. Imagining Magic Missle or Storm Hammer rushing towards you when you’re trying to escape, turning your back and using Sproink can be difficult. But it does give the Enchantress more room in the event of a sudden gank. This is not an item that will get Enchantress up in every game.
6. Oracle (7/10)
Fortune’s End’s cast range is increased by 800, AoE by 150 and causes half of Root’s duration to stun.
Fortune’s End’s initial cast range is 850, then 1000 when a level 15 talent is added. Combined with the new Scepter, it goes up to 1800! To better understand the range, even without the Aether’s Lens, Oracle can use Fortune’s End on enemies in the pit from as far as the Radiant shrine and Dire’s shrine. When the channel is full for 3.5 seconds, it will stun for 1.75 seconds, followed by 1.75 seconds of rooting with a 6 second cooldown! This skill also deals 210 AoE magic damage (350 radius). However, Oracle’s main mission is to save teammates and heal, making Spirit Vessel and Aether’s Lens the optimal choice. If the game lasts longer, Aghanim’s Scepter could be the optimal choice to constantly interrupt the opponent’s tempo in teamfight. Stun and cast range also help you prevent opponents from teleporting as well as channeling from afar.
7. Silencer (7/10)
Last Word becomes a 600 unit AoE move.
It’s like the second Global Silence. 600 AoE is quite a wide range, if it is used to make the opponent have to turn on BKB, most opponents will not have an option to deal with Global Silence afterwards. However, you must use Last Word first, because Global Silence penetrates Spell Immunity, but Last Word does not. Last Word now deals damage based on an intelligence difference multiplier, so Agility and Strength heroes will lose a lot of health from this move. Silencer has the +120 GPM talent at level 15, which can help the hero get to Scepter earlier even when playing in position 5 (can play mid, as we saw in 7.23).
8. Dazzle (8/10)
Shadow Wave’s bounces are increased by 3, bounce range is increased by 200, and each bounce dispels target allies.
Dazzle’s new Scepter is so much better than before. AoE Grave seems like a great upgrade, but it’s rare that multiple heroes need Grave at the same time, so it doesn’t do much. But the new Scepter is good, mostly because of its dispel. Heroes must use Eul’s Scepter of Divinity or Lotus Orb, or even BKB, to remove annoying silences or slows from the opponent. Dazzle’s Scepter is the solution to all of the above – and with Bad Juju, it can be used every 4 seconds! Imagine a scene where the team is silenced by Global Silence. Dazzle with Guardian Greaves and Aghanim’s Scepter will remove silence for himself and then the entire team with a single Shadow Wave. Of course, it costs a lot of gold to build these items, but thanks to the cooldown reduction, Midas can be an item to increase farm speed, even if you play as a support. Scepter also increases the number of bounces by 3 (from 6 to 9), meaning that when combined with heroes like Phantom Lancer, the maximum damage when using the ability can be increased from 1020 to 1530!
9. Lich (8/10)
Sinister Gaze is now a 400 AoE target move.
This is a 400 radius move, similar to Black Hole’s 420 radius with a cooldown of only 18 seconds! If standing in the right position and waiting for the enemy to huddle in teamfight, Lich can disable multiple heroes at once for 2.5 seconds. Ideally, toss Chain Frost on multiple enemy heroes and then use Sinister Gaze on them! Scepter’s move, similar to Lion’s Hex AoE talent, also helps Lich disable invisible or untargetable objects like Slark in Shadow Dance or Dark Willow when using Shadow Realm. Apparently this is a good Scepter in patch 7.23. In addition, the effect of the old Scepter from the endless Chain Frost has also appeared in the level 25 talent. Lich in general has nothing to lose!
10. Pudge (9/10)
Reduce Dismember cooldown to 11 seconds. Allows you to designate an ally as a target for Dismember, instantly swallowing them and healing them for 4% of their total health per second. Teammates can exit at any time by giving commands.
Heart of Tarrasque and Fountain restore 5% of their total health every second. That shows how good Pudge’s Scepter is. Just 25 seconds in Pudge’s stomach will restore the dying hero to full health. In addition to healing, it is also considered a tool to save teammates (similar to Lifestealer’s old Scepter). Pudge can blink and Dismember an ally and take damage until the ally is strong enough to help. It applies to all situations – from taunt, stun, root – to any disable when Pudge eats an ally. In addition, it also reduces the Dismember cooldown from 20 to 11 seconds, which is quite useful in attack. Pudge farm is better than many other supports thanks to Rot and it doesn’t take too long to get to Scepter. Recently, this hero can also be played in the offlane, which means that Pudge will get to Scepter faster after having Blink and Aether’s Lens.
