Red Hook Studios is currently developing Darkest Dungeon 2, the sequel to the popular 2016 turn-based game.
The studio hasn’t released too many details about the game at the moment except for the trailer shown below. In addition, in an interview with PC Gamer, the studio said that they are creating a “completely different” structure for the meta game. Darkest Dungeon will be out in Early Access first.
The trailer above introduces six familiar character classes – Grave Robber, Leper, Man-at-Arms, Plague Doctor, Highwayman, and Hellion – together looking up at the snowy mountain in the distance. It seems that the setting of Darkest Dungeon 2 will take place in the frozen snowy mountains. Video narrated by Wayne June – Red Hook confirms Darkest Dungeon narrator will return with the original composers: Stuart Chatwood, and Power Up.
PC Gamers: What made the studio decide to develop a sequel to Darkest Dungeon?
Tyler Sigman and Chris Bourassa of Red Hook Studios: We love Darkest Dunegon’s chaotic character class, atmosphere, and world. Horror is a fun place to explore unique ideas, and we have more stories we want to tell. In terms of mechanics, we think the team has some bright spots (like combat) and more things that people want to explore and build on. More than that, the team wanted to develop Darkest Dungeon 2 so that it has its own experience; The game will have its own creation and identity.
So what gameplay and changes are you going to tell us about this time around?
Darkest Dungeon’s combat system will return, but it’s been significantly tweaked – in terms of both mechanics and presentation. More importantly, however, we are developing a completely different metagame structure. Darkest Dungeon 2 is a game where you have to endure an extremely difficult journey, not just sweeping the yard.
What is one of the lessons the team will apply in developing Darkest Dungeon 2?
We make a lot of Darkest Dungeons with a team of only 5. It consumes a lot of physical and mental, just like you go to Warren in the game. We are more self-disciplined this time, and with more staff to make things more practical and reliable. However, agility and creativity are still key, and we plan to keep that. In the end, the game is only good when you have a good team. We invest a lot in finding the right people and providing them with an environment that fosters creativity. We thought we could do everything while keeping everything small.
The ruined background in Darkest Dungeon is the highlight of the game. Will the sequel continue to revolve around it, or will it be a new location?
In Darkest Dungeon 2, we’ll briefly show players the unexpected twists and turns in the super apocalypse and distorted world… and that’s all we can say for now.
How many people are there in Red Hook Studios right now and is that the size you want to stay the same throughout this project, or will it change during development? Can you guys describe the culture of the studio?
We have reached 14 people now, and plan to add about 6 more in the next 18 months. Cultural fit is extremely important to us, and the team is not in a hurry to grow. Open discussion, low ego, and participatory thinking are an important part of the process – the goal of the team is to find the best option, and we love challenging each other to get what we want.
What is the game development system that the team envisions? Is Early Access suitable for this project?
We’re fans of the Early Access model, but we only do Early Access depending on the game we develop. While there are some major differences between the systems of Darkest Dungeon 1 and Darkest Dungeon 2, the next version still fits into the Early Access style.
Early Access getting games to fans faster, getting the system running, and giving fans a chance to contribute to game development, is very important to us. Early Access makes it possible to change your production plans based on customer signals – positive reviews are a clear signal to invest more in the project and make some ‘wish it’s been added’ to. real.
