Even without an audience, the Intel Extreme Masters Season XIV CS:GO World Championship still provided the frenzy with a $250,000 prize pool and the chance to win the Intel Grand Slam for the first time for the two finalists.
16 invited teams, from qualifying and winning other IEM tournaments, entered Katowice with the expectation of making it through to the group stage and competing at Spodek Arena in front of a large audience.
Unfortunately, that did not happen when the Katowice regional government announced it would not allow large crowds, due to concerns about the Corona virus epidemic.
Even without spectators, the tournament went on and the teams put on spectacular performances.
summary
There was no explosive phase in the group stage, because the high-ranked teams easily passed the group stage to enter the playoffs. Astralis made it 2-0 to Cloud9, Vitality and Fnatic to reach the semi-finals. And Na`Vi and G2 Esports continue their form from BLAST Premier Spring.
100 Thieves was the most surprising factor in the group stage: after losing 2-0 to G2 in the first series, they won three series in a row to enter the playoffs, including a comeback against Evil Geniuses and mousesports.
At the playoffs, the two most stable teams reached the finals. Na`Vi star s1mple took the team to the final game after beating Team Liquid and crushing Astralis. G2 overcame Fnatic in a tense series.
In the final, Boombl4 played an unbelievable match right from G2’s Nuke map pick, getting 28 lives in the first half. He finished with 32 kills while his team beat their opponent 16-4. Both teams struggled back and forth on map 2, Dust2, but Na`Vi once again rose to lead 2-0. Na`Vi continued to overwhelm G2 right at the opponent’s map pick, Mirage: winning 16-2 to quickly become the champion.
