Earlier this year, comments from 2K Games’ parent company Take-Two Interactive led many to believe that Borderlands 3 would be released before March 2019. They hinted that “a highly anticipated new game title will be available.” wait” is out in the meantime, and Borderlands 3 is seen as the best candidate, especially as developer Gearbox Software has started recruiting more people.
However, new comments from Take-Two seem to suggest that Borderlands 3 will be delayed past March 2019 and most likely fall into fiscal 2020. In the latest financial update, CEO Strauss Zelnick Take-Two’s lead repeatedly talked about a “highly anticipated game,” but this time he said that the game had been pushed back. This unnamed game will be released from April 1, 2019 to March, 2020.
Zelnick didn’t say what caused the delay, only saying it was postponed “to add development time.” The CEO also said that despite the delay, Take-Two is “excited” about the new game and hopes it will “improve” the company’s results in the next financial year.
Although Borderlands 3 is not a name specifically mentioned in the financial statements, but with the latest comments, fans can guess which game Take-Two is referring to. Gearbox has confirmed that Borderlands 3 will not be present at E3 2018, dispelling any rumors about the game appearing at this event. These rumors were spread from the open comments of Take-Two.
If you skip E3 2018, then Borderlands 3 will need more time to develop as Zelnick said. The Borderlands franchise is known for its vast open world, gameplay and humorous characters, so Gearbox wanted to make sure the sequel lived up to its name. It’s been four years since the last Borderlands title (Pre-Sequel launched in 2014) and with such a long gap, the development team will certainly be under pressure to keep the game on track.
