Brendan ‘PlayerUnknown’ Greene has just announced that after 5 years of working on the PUBG game, he will be moving on to another project. However, PlayerUnknown will continue to stay at PUBG Corp to run special PUBG projects. According to him, this segment “will explore connections and interactions in the gaming space.”
Multiplayer is clearly the focus, but Greene said he’s not interested in making a sequel to PUBG. “The last survivor idea was great, but I did it. I have no plans to do PUBG 2. Battle Royale has been enough for me, now it’s time to try something else. There are ideas about how we connect with people and deliver different experiences.”
The Special Projects division gives him full discretion, not having to produce any games. “We are not for profit,” he explains. “Maybe one day it will happen, but now is the time to explore. There’s no deadline, we just have a few years to play around with. Games and the gaming industry in general have become too difficult, which is extremely fortunate. We can really explore and be curious for a while.”
While he’s looking to other things, Greene has faith in the future of battle royale in general: He wants it to become an esports, and hopes more people will develop the genre “for passion,” more is to make money. He gave Apex Legends as an example, the game was unexpectedly successful in February.
“Apex Legends is amazing, they don’t do anything unexpected, just announce and release a great game,” he said. “It is very difficult to enter this market right now. I don’t envy them in this achievement.”
He also admits he is facing a similar challenge, because whatever these special projects are, the probability of replicating PUBG’s success is very small. “I know. But that’s why I feel lucky to work with PUBG Corp.”
