The announcement of Diablo Immortal at BlizzCon was unexpected. Revealing this mobile game instead of the full Diablo 4 was “big backfire” at the last BlizzCon 2018 event. However, according to news from Kotaku, the reaction to Diablo Immortal may have been very different, when the website said that Blizzard planned to confirm Diablo 4 was in development but canceled this information before Friday. via.
Two sources close to Kotaku told Kotaku that the original plan was to announce Diablo Immortal, and then ended with a video with studio co-founder, Allen Adham, confirming Diablo 4 is in development, but isn’t ready yet’ show’ out. This move sounds a lot like Bethesda’s Elder Scolls 6 announcement at E3, an announcement that made fans of the series overjoyed.
But for reasons unknown, this plan changed a few weeks before BlizzCon, and the Diablo 4 announcement was dropped. One of Kotaku’s sources said Blizzard isn’t ready to announce yet because development is still mixed, and the title could change during development.
However, that doesn’t really explain why Blizzard decided to withdraw the announcement. Diablo really doesn’t need any further explanation at this point – like The Elder Scrolls games, each new installment changes but its essence remains mostly the same. That’s how Bethesda received huge applause when it appeared exactly four words on the big screen of E3, and Blizzard could have done the same: To tell everyone, “One more thing,” smash the Diablo 4 logo on the screen, “Thank you! Goodnight!”
