Blizzard suddenly announced that StarCraft 2 will stop developing, meaning this game will no longer add new content.
StarCraft 2 was released in July 2010. Since then, the game has continued the legacy of its predecessor, carrying the responsibility of becoming one of the most iconic real-time strategy (RTS) games. StarCraft is an esports game and is well-played. However, what we see in the game will not be updated any more.
Blizzard revealed in its October 15 announcement about the game’s support process. Starcraft 2 will be cutting staff not long after its 10th anniversary.
“We will not be producing any more paid content,” Blizzard noted. From Commanders to War Chests, no new in-game trades will be added in the future. However, this does not mean that the game will not be updated.”
“The team continues to support StarCraft II the same way we did with the older games before it.” That means Blizzard will focus on the competitive segment with balance updates, instead of adding new content.
“We will continue the seasons and fix the balance if necessary from here on.” Talking about the game’s esports ecosystem, Blizzard said that StarCraft 2 will continue to be a competitive sport. According to Blizzard, the game is “still growing” thanks to its partners ESL Gaming and GSL.
“We sincerely thank you for your support. The team will update any of its plans in the future…”
Blizzard has a long history of stretching development between games. Therefore, it will probably be many more years before we see a new installment of StarCraft.
