Valve has stopped developing Artifact 2.0. This reboot was intended to revive the previous failed title, but after more than a year of development, the team realized that Artifact was not attractive enough for players to continue the work. Now, both versions of Artifact are free for everyone.
“It’s been a year and a half since the current Artifact team started working on the reboot,” Valve said. “While we are pleased with the goals we have achieved in the game, the team has not been able to bring the player base to the right level, it is worth continuing to develop the game. As a result, Valve has made the difficult decision to discontinue the Artifact 2.0 beta development.”
Artifact is now completely free – the game requires no purchase to play and all cards are unlocked from the start. Players who already own the cards will see them turn into a ‘Collector’s Edition’, which can be sold on the marketplace. But that’s the only thing left in the game – everything else has been removed.
The Artifact 2.0 beta has now changed its name to Artifact Foundry and is also completely free. The cards can be earned in-game and cannot be sold on the marketplace.
“We thank all Artifact players, especially those who have helped us refine and perfect the game to become Artifact Foundry. The team feels this is the best way to serve the community. We’re proud of what we’ve done for the two games and are excited for the game to reach a wider audience.”
