One of the important resources in Apex Legends is your blood. Apex is a battle royale game so survival is more important than killing to win the match.
Understanding how the blood system in the game works is the first step towards increasing your survivability, and understanding how armor works can increase health and is the key to overwhelming the game.
Apex’s health and armor system is quite simple. These values do not change between characters, and healing items cannot be augmented by other items or skills. Once you know the basics, you’ve got the system.
Basic
All characters in Apex have 100 health and no armor when they first appear in the game. The only way to increase health is to equip the Body Shield, which the player can find in the game.
When equipping Body Shield, you will see white bars appear above your health bar. Common (white) Body Shield plus two armor bars equals 50 armor. Rare (blue) plus three armor bars equals 75 armor. Epic (purple) and Legendary (gold) Body Shield plus 4 armor bars equals 100 armor.
The damage the player deals to armor and health is the same. Body Shields do not reduce damage, they only increase the total health of the character. Thus, the character in Apex has a total health of 100 without Body Shield, 150 with Common, 175 with Rare, and 200 with Epic and Legendary.
Health and armor do not automatically heal. You can only recover them by activating items and skills.
Healing
There are currently three healing items in Apex Legends. You can move while healing, but your movement speed will slow down and can’t do anything else.
- Syringes (Common), heals 25 health and takes 5 seconds to cast.
- Medkits (Rare), heals 100 health and takes 8 seconds to cast.
- Phoenix Kits (Epic), heals 100 health and 100 armor but takes up to 10 seconds.
If you heal excess health, the residual amount will not be counted. The only item that can heal both armor and health is the Phoenix Kit.
Another way to heal is to use Lifeline’s DOC Heal Drone.
Armor Recovery
There are three items in Apex that can restore armor. You can move while healing, but your movement speed will slow down and can’t do anything else.
- Shield Cell (Common), restores 25 armor and takes 3 seconds to cast.
- Shield Battery (Rare), restores 100 armor and takes 5 seconds to cast.
- Phoenix Kits (Epic), restores 100 armor and 100 health but takes 10 seconds to cast.
A quick way to restore your armor is to replace your current armor with new armor of the same rarity. If you’re wearing a damaged Common Body Shield, it’s best to replace it with a new one instead of spending the Shield Cell.
Legendary Body Armor can restore armor when the player ‘executes’ an opponent.
Other types of armor and protection
Some items and abilities can add protection to the user, but they don’t affect their health or armor.
For example, a helmet is a great defense that doesn’t affect health. They reduce your head damage by 30% (Common), 40% (Rare), and 50% (Epic and Legendary). Legendary increases the healing speed of your active spells.
Knockdown Shield is different armor. They only work when you fall, meaning they do not affect the character’s health. They can protect you when falling from 100 damage (Common), 500 damage (Rare) and 750 damage (Epic and Legendary). Legendary allows you to resurrect yourself.
The character Tank Gibraltar has a special shield that protects him but does not affect his health. Dome of Protection protects allies in the circle from bullets for 15 seconds, while Gun Shield’s passive protects the character’s chest from bullets.
Above is how health and armor work in Apex Legends. Always carry healing items, find a good Body Shield and fight to become the next Champion of the game.
