Instructions for using USB to speed up Windows 10

Have you ever heard that just a USB drive can speed up Windows 10?

It sounds hard to believe, but using USB to improve the performance of Windows 10 is absolutely the word “big brother” Microsoft has affirmed, so you can rest assured that this is not a joke. April Fool’s Day.

ReadyBoost is a built-in feature of Windows 10 that uses a USB, SD card, or CF card as a cache to store files and data to speed up Windows 10. This feature can only be applied to PC sets using traditional HDDs. As for the Windows 10 operating system installed on the machine assembled from new or used components SSD hard drive will not be supported because it’s already fast, if you use it, you won’t notice the difference, or even can affect the performance of the SSD.

Step 1: You will need 1 USB (or SD card) with at least 500MB free space with high data transfer rate. Then you plug the USB (or SD card) into the computer and then open This PC up.

Step 2: Right-click the USB drive icon (or SD card) and select Properties.

Step 3: Select item ReadyBoost. Windows will calculate if your USB can be used for the ReadyBoost feature, if not, Windows will let you know. And if yes, please check the box Use this device.

You can see below that Windows has calculated the required amount of USB space that can be used for ReadyBoost. You choose Apply then choose OK to confirm the ReadyBoost feature can use this free space.

*Note that while ReadyBoost is in progress, you cannot save files to USB.

With this way, you can speed up Windows 10 significantly, but the speed will be different for each usage habit, as well as for different PC configurations. Also from now on when you open the USB drive inside File Explorer, you will see a file named ReadyBoost.sfcache. This is the file that shows how much of the USB space is used for ReadyBoost.

How to stop ReadyBoost?

If you no longer need to use ReadyBoost or you have upgraded new components for your PC set, you can turn off the ReadyBoost feature by the following way.

Right-click on the USB drive and select Properties. Then select item ReadyBoost then check box Do not use this device. Finally choose Apply then choose OK To confirm. Next, go to the USB drive to check if the file is still there ReadyBoost.sfcache no, if it is, delete it.
