Interchangeable parts are a key feature of higher-end controllers, like the Xbox Elite. Valve’s patent application describes the ability to completely change the controls: For example, remove the thumbstick and replace it with a d-pad button. There’s even a mention of trackball support.

Valve filed a patent application in September 2018, but it has only recently published the content of the patent. Whether this is something Valve is still pursuing, or the other device is currently unknown. The patent application is currently only on paper, whether Valve is really developing a new controller or not, no one can confirm that.
