As one of the series horror game Koei Tecmo’s biggest hit but since Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water Released exclusively for the Wii U in 2015, it seems that the company has no intention of developing a new sequel. After years of absence, Fatal Frame once again showing signs of resurgence with the re-release of Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water for PC and modern console platforms. Although not a completely new game, this re-release, with many additional content, promises to satisfy fans.
The plot of Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is heavily inspired by horror legends in Japanese mythology and folklore. The special thing here is that the main character will see the ghost through a camera. The mechanics may seem odd, but they’re compelling enough to make the series popular.
Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is set in a small town in rural Japan, not far from Mt. Hikami, the ideal place for young women to… commit suicide. It is said that those who end their lives here will have a “clean” death and will not worry about becoming a wandering ghost in the world like when committing suicide in other places. On the mountain there are several ruined buildings, an ancient temple filled with the souls of pious people and, unsurprisingly, all haunted.
Most of the time, the player will follow Yuri, a high school girl with the ability to see dead people and listen to their memories. She decides to find the missing people on Mount Hikami and bring their souls home. The other two playable characters are Ren, a miserable young man with a haunting dream, and Miu, who also has special telepathic abilities, who goes to Mount Hikami in hopes of finding her biological mother. Together, they get caught up in the mystery and must figure out how to solve their own stories as well as uncover the secret of the deadly mountain Hikami.
It is known that this re-release version will be added with many new content, the camera mechanism has also been redesigned to fit the current gaming device, but how specifically has not been revealed. . From 2001 to 2008, there were 4 Fatal Frame games released by Koei Tecmo, but of course that was not enough. This comeback after many years of absence is probably a positive sign that Fatal Frame is gradually returning to its peak.
Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water releases in 2021 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
