Gamers should be careful when downloading software online.
Referring to the software that displays the FPS in the game, gamers will surely think of MSI’s extremely popular MSI Afterburner software. This is a software that helps gamers not only see the FPS, CPU and GPU temperatures in the game, but also can tweak and push their graphics cards far beyond their limits (overclocking). Due to the huge popularity of MSI Afterburner, recently this software has become the target of hackers attacking the network.
Specifically, MSI recently informed users that a fake website with the address “afterburner-msi.space” disguised as the official MSI website to download MSI Afterburner software. This cheat site mimics the design and look of the official MSI website and offers fake downloads of the MSI Afterburner software. This website hosts software that may contain viruses, trojans, keyloggers, or other types of malicious programs that have been disguised to look like MSI Afterburner. In a statement, an MSI representative said:
“MSI has been notified to the public of a malware that is disguised as the official MSI Afterburner software. The malware is being illegally hosted on a suspicious website posing as the official MSI website with the domain name https://Afterburner-msi.space. MSI has nothing to do with this website or the said domain.”
“The fake website mimics the look and design of the official MSI website and offers fake downloads of MSI Afterburner. This website hosts fake MSI Afterburner software that may contain viruses, trojans, keyloggers or other types of malicious programs that have been disguised to look like MSI Afterburner. Do not download any software from this website.” MSI said in a post on its official Facebook fan page.
Either way, this is MSI’s reminder to gamers to double-check that URL before downloading the MSI Afterburner software, to make sure you’re downloading the correct version. Currently, gamers can download the official MSI Afterburner version here: https://www.msi.com/Landing/Afterburner/graphics-cards.
“MSI strives to deliver reliable products that deliver incredible user experiences. As such, we feel it is our responsibility to protect those who have placed their trust in our dedication. We condemn this violation of our property rights and the damage it has caused to MSI’s reputation. The necessary actions to remove the malicious impersonation site are underway.” the company added.
