Players are only reported if they behave badly during the game, not because they played poorly. All in all, if pro players play poorly at times, so do all of us – no matter how good we are.
But the current system is being misused by users. In some cases, the Dota reporting system was used to report poor play, instead of reporting toxic players. Overreported players can result in punishment, such as having to participate in matchmaking low-priority or being banned from in-game chat.
For example, a Techies player gets more reports than other players. Obviously everyone understands the problem with Techies, but this is the hero of choice in the game, and everyone can choose this hero. There are many ways to play Dota 2 and the hero lineup is very diverse: from burning mana, forcing you to attack teammates, to banning heroes from using skills or items for 16 seconds. There’s really nothing wrong with liking and playing that hero.
The reporting system has been around since the launch of Dota 2 and it probably won’t change much. It is a good tool to use to condemn player misconduct and your behavior plays a huge role in the quality of the game.
So, can Valve fix the reporting system so it’s less likely to punish innocent players by mistake? While there is no direct approach to fixing this problem, there are many ways to reduce the impact of the reporting system.
For example, when players report others just because they play certain heroes correctly, the reporter’s behavior is often frequent, recurring. For these people, false reports may be marked on the account and may not be counted.
The number of reports can vary according to the level, depending on the player’s activity and reporting behavior in the past. Those who repeatedly misuse the reporting system may have points deducted, so that they no longer abuse it.
There is a solution that Valve can learn from other games. Such as system Overwatch in CSGO for longtime players, for them to check replays of players suspected of cheating or hacking. This system can be applied in Dota 2 for the same purpose, besides confirming if the reason for the report is correct.
Those cases are quite rare. The fact that you play poorly or choose a strange hero has to pay the price of being reported. However, Dota 2 is a game where anything can be successful. That’s how the game as well as the professional arena has always innovated over the years.
Valve needs to be more aggressive about banning offending players and accounts, but they also need to be careful not to affect innocent players. This reporting system needs to be used properly to prevent misbehavior.
