In an email to major tournament organizers, Valve said they plan to replace the Major’s current invitation format with a ranking system. This will create two more tournaments ahead of the Fall Major.
According to Valve, this system combines points earned from the Spring Major – ESL One Rio, which takes place in May – and two other events leading up to the second Major of the year (which runs from November 2 to November 15). .
Three events will help determine the rankings: the top 8 teams will be invited to the Fall Major as Legends, the next 8 will be Challenger, and the remaining 8 will come from the current Minor system of the 4 main regions. .
The developer suggested that the tournament organizers organize two more ranked tournaments and made the following requirements:
- The event takes place between July and September.
- The event will include a LAN section with at least 8 teams. Before that, it could be online or LAN competition.
- The event consists of at least 24 teams: 16 slots are reserved for Major ranked teams, and 8 teams are selected by the organizers.
- The event results will help select the 16 strongest teams.
- The event’s initial seeding will be based on the Major rating.
- Valve will support up to $250k in bonuses.
The email also states that the primary goal of these events is to determine which teams will be invited to the Major. Valve emphasizes that they will not impose format, size and location.
This time coincides with the players’ summer break, established by the CSPPA, which falls from July 15 to August 15 of this year.
The Major’s invite system has remained largely the same since the first offline qualifier for ESL One Katowice 2015. It was tweaked slightly at the FACEIT Major: the last two teams at the New Legends Stage will not receive the Challengers title and must Back in the Minor system, there will be an additional “Play-in” section to determine two more slots.
