Dota 2: PPD retires from pro play

On April 20, 2020, Peter “PPD” Dager, one of the typical captains of professional Dota 2, decided to retire from Dota.

PPD said he focused on video games shortly after high school with Heroes of Newerth. He started playing under the moniker “peterpandam” which was later shortened to PPD. Towards the end of his career, he once again adopted the pseudonym “peterpandam”, presumably in tribute to his early career.

After a brief Heroes of Newerth journey, when he finished second in DreamHon Winter 2012, DreamHon Summer 2013 with Complexity, he switched to Dota 2 with teammate Zai in 2013. After The International 2013, he competed for teams like ” Stay Free”, to win a spot on the “Super Strong Dinosaurs” team. This lineup includes ComeWithMe and Sneyking. During that time, they finished second in “Bigpoint battle #8” when they lost to Evil Geniuses.

Then PPD formed the famous lineup “SADBO YS”. The lineup includes Zai, Fear, UNiVeRsE. At this point, PPD assumes the role of captain and draft is done by Fear. These members won 19 games in a row, and won the Electronic Sports Prime/Shock Therapy Cup first prize. On February 21, 2014, SADBOYS announced as the new Evil Geniuses lineup.

EG recently attended some famous events like Monster Energy Invtational. The team was then directly invited to The International 2014, finishing third when they lost to China’s Vici Gaming 1-2. PPD brought in SumaiL and Aui_2000 and then won the Dota Asian Championships followed by The International 2015, marking North America’s first TI championship, with a $6 million echo slam.

This is considered the peak of PPD’s career. After TI5, he again placed 3rd at The International 2016. In December 2016, it was announced that he would be the new CEO of Evil Geniuses. After TI7, he left Evil Geniuses as well as the CEO position, to return to playing professionally.

In 2018, PPD took over the captain position, with OpTic Gaming attended TI, ranked 7-8. 2019 saw PPD move into a new home in Ninja in Pajamas and attend TI. In the end, the team was unable to claim a 2-0 win and exited the group stage with a 0-3-5 record. The 2019-2020 season was not much brighter for Ninja when the team ranked 22nd in the DPC rankings with 151 points.

PPD is a rather noisy player with his straightforward temperament and outspoken statements. Some love as well as hate him about this. But all must admit, along with others, he shaped Dota 2 into the game it is today. PPD has helped new stars rise like SumaiL. Let’s wish PPD every success in his next career path.
