While there were still plenty of online Counter-Strike tournaments going on this past month, this time around we’ve seen more major tournaments this year. While May is mostly focused on the first Regional Major Ranking, ESL One: Road to Rio, in June they feature BLAST Premier Spring Season, DreamHack Masters Spring, as well as summer RMRs: cs_summit 6 and WePlay! Clutch Island.
Continuing the “online era”, we still witness many surprises. BIG and Complexity in Europe have won titles at major tournaments. Meanwhile, FURIA in North America was the team that made the headlines first, but in the end, the most prominent was Evil Geniuses from last place DreamHack returning with consecutive BLAST and Summit championships.
Scoring mechanism
Here are tTo summarize the factors that affect the scores of the teams on the leaderboard each month:
The leaderboard has a base score of teams based on their performance in the previous year (achievement points). Then there is the “Form” score, which is calculated based on the individual achievements of the Players in the team and the results of online tournaments in the last 2 months. Finally, the LANs point, this point is calculated based on the performance in offline tournaments within the last 3 months.
Also, if a team wants to keep their base score before the new month’s score is calculated, the team’s roster must keep at least 3 players from the previous month.Due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, results from online competition (previously didn’t count as much), now has more weight in the “Achievements” and “Recent Results”)
Here are five key takeaways from the June rankings:
BIG exploded after a month of dreamlike competition
We have a world number one champion and this name is not on the list of top teams of the past few months. BIG surprised everyone with an impressive performance, greatly improved with the new lineup earlier this year: the young duo Nils “k1to” Gruhne and Florian “syrsoN” Riche. Starting June at the 20th place in the world, after returning to the ESL Meisterschaft, BIG surprised everyone at the DreamHack Masters Spring heavyweight tournament. Although in the group stage, BIG did not leave much impression, but in the playoffs the team showed how mature they are. They defeated FaZe twice in a row with ease and won the prize after learning from the first map G2 and defeating the Franco-Serbian team in the BO5 series. Many people thought this was just a lucky win, but they were wrong. BIG came back a few weeks later and won the surprise cs_summit. They’ve only lost two of the eight series in the entire tournament: to OG and Vitality. But then BIG avenged and knocked Vitality down in BO5 while being 0-1 by default.
Vitality, Evil Geniuses return to form
No team has tasted as bitter fruit as Vitality in the past month. They are considered to have improved continuously in the past weeks, but missed two championship opportunities as well as the world No 1 position – only three points. The French team missed the opportunity to become the strongest team in the world for the second time. Alex’s departure “ALEX” McMeekin had a bad influence on Vitality. The team almost dropped out of the top 10 when using rookie Kevin “misutaaa” Rabier and Dan’s Leadership “apEX” Madesclaire. Things finally settled in June: Vitality recovered to his old form, fit enough to be contenders at BLAST Premier Spring and cs_summit 6, but both times lost the trophy: Complexity and BIG were the two teams to beat. Vitality at the final.
Similar to Evil Geniuses, the team is as disgraced as Vitality. At the beginning of June, EG finished last at DreamHack Masters Springs, but now the team has recovered: beating almost every single strongest player in the region including Liquid, MIBR, FURIA and Gen.G to win consecutive BLAST and cs_summit, entered the top 3 for the first time in 2020.
Astralis is still unstable
The Astralis team situation began to malfunction in May, after Lukas “gla1ve” Rossander and Andreas “Xyp9x” Højsleth requested rest to recuperate from the stress of competition. The team lost its world No. 1 position to Natus Vincere, but it wasn’t until June that the team really felt the impact of the duo. Astralis lost 317 points in just one month and fell to 10th in the rankings, the lowest ranking since November 2016, when gla1ve took over from Finn “karrigan” Andersen. The Danish team are now just 29 points away from the top 10, and things could get worse before the boys recover.
After a disappointing month where the team won just two out of five matches, Astralis will be further disadvantaged as ESL Pro League Season 11 scores will disappear from the “Recent Results” section next week. It will probably be quite a while before the Danish team returns to the top, and fans have more questions as the team attends the big tournament after the break: ESL One Cologne.
100 Thieves plummeted without brakes
The Australian team could not replicate last year’s 2020 form: 100 Thieves were in the top 10 more times than outside the top 10 and sometimes even reached 5th place in a short time. In the new year, 100 Thieves had a performance problem, a trend that started even when the LAN tournaments were still going: the team lost to BLAST Premier Spring and dropped IEM Katowice in the quarterfinals. 4th place at cs_summit 6 may be the first positive signal, but it should be noted that 100 Thieves only beat Chaos (39th) and Cloud9 (20th) to get to the playoffs. Specifically, it’s been 6 weeks since the team beat a top 15 team (Gen.G in DreamHack Masters Spring at the end of May) and almost 10 weeks when they beat a top 10 team (Evil Geniuses in ESL) One: Road to Rio).
100 Thieves will return from the players’ vacation at the DreamHack Open Summer tournament. While it is not considered a heavyweight tournament, it will be an opportunity for the Australian team to recover against ESL One Cologne, where the arena really happens.
Heroic is back in the top 20
Things looked pretty bleak for Heroic at first after the team dropped out of the top 30 since losing Patrick “es3tag” Hansen and Marco “Snappi” Pfeiffer being substituted. Now, Heroic is finally back before the FunPlus Phoenix deal happened. The team has been steadily improving over the past two months and recently beat several big names to place 4 cs_summit 6, including ENCE and fnatic. And yet, Heroic continuously won a map in the BO3s that have lost: NiP, Vitality and OG. With Nikolaj “niko” Kristensen and René “TeSeS” As Madsen has mostly adapted to the team, Heroic will likely be deep into the DreamHack Open Summer, the only post-holiday tournament they will attend on the calendar.
