While we’ve seen a lot of Death Stranding videos at the moment, including the latest trailer during Sony PlayStation’s E3 2018 press conference, the vast majority of fans still don’t quite understand what Kojima’s new game is about. Therefore, project director Hideo Kojima has decided to make it clear why he wants to keep this PS4 exclusive super product a secret.
Variety did an interview with Kojima and he said the reason he kept it a secret: partly because of the reaction of society, in the open and public world we live in. According to Kojima, “We live in the age of social media. Right now, people just want an immediate answer, not just an answer, they want to know how it feels. This: good yes, bad yes. This game I should like. This game I shouldn’t like. They want answers to what they think they should think.”
By not clearly stating the idea of Death Stranding to the community, Kojima is causing people to hotly argue about the potential that this game brings instead of the details they see from the development team. This ensures project secrecy while keeping people talking. As Kojima explains, “It’s like math, where the answers don’t matter. The important point is how to solve it.”
Another reason why Kojima has decided to keep the project private is because of the way the game is being marketed today. The director of Death Stranding and the creator of Metal Gear Solid says industry marketing methods reveal too much about the game, destroying what’s most important to the game – its journey. “I don’t want to take away the most enjoyable part of the player,” Kojima said.
Overall, the decision to keep Death Stranding a secret seems to have worked for me, as players’ curiosity appeared everywhere in the community. Hopefully we will know the official launch date of the game soon.
