‘Go Live’ is one of Discord’s best streaming features

In the past few weeks, Discord launched its new livestream feature. If you haven’t used it yet, it works like this: Join a voice channel, press ‘Go Live’, and anyone who joins the channel can watch you play the game.

Go Live can’t be used by everyone, but if you’re a Nitro user or in a server boosted to level 1 by a Nitro user, you can use this feature.

Of course, it was not created to replace Twitch, YouTube or Mixer, to stream for the whole world to watch. But not everyone has the passion to stream for everyone to see, and simply stream for a few friends. No need to set up complicated configurations in OBS, now Go Live greatly simplifies.

Go Live doesn’t really have much lag. It depends on your network quality, but most viewers can see what you are seeing at the same time. That makes Go Live great for sharing games, because they don’t have to wait many seconds to know what you’re talking about.

In addition to Go Live, there are other ways to stream with friends: through Steam or other video chat services. But in general, nothing is as convenient and simple as Go Live. Part of that is because it’s built into the voice channel you’re using when playing the game.

If you want to try Go Live, Discord needs to recognize the game you’re playing. If that doesn’t work, you can add the game to your Discord configuration under ‘Game Activity’. In fact, you have more applications. This means you can share non-game content with your friends, like movies, but be careful as Discord doesn’t say whether they monitor your private content or not.

Aside from privacy issues. Go Live will automatically black out the stream and notify viewers when you minimize the game being streamed, so that the stream does not show your desktop. However, Windows alt-tab still shows up if used, so viewers can get a glimpse of open window screens before the game minimizes.

The unfortunate point of Go Live is that the stream does not automatically save, so you have to record it yourself with other software if you want to keep your livestream.

The lack of delay in the stream will help you create gaming sessions with friends, letting your instructors do what you need to do. Just like in the old days, when three or four people went to one’s house to play and guide each other on the sofa!
