Sony has yet to say if the PS5 will be backwards compatible with all PS4 games. The company made several big announcements about the next-gen console this week, confirming the PS5’s launch time and configuration. However, the company has not yet said whether the device is backward compatible or not.
Talking to Famitsu, Sony said, “Right now, the development team is doing their best to confirm if it can be fully backwards compatible.” The company also asked fans to “please wait for more information”, user bk2128 translated from Sony’s Japanese interview. It is not clear if Sony is talking about whether PS4 games will be playable on PS5 or just some features such as trophies, multiplayer, DLC not being included.
Sony has said that backwards compatibility is an important part of what they want to do with the PS5. In April 2019, Mark Cerny said that the PS4 and PS5 have the same system architecture and it’s not difficult to get PS4 games to run on the PS5. As the architect of the new PS5 system, Cerny knows what she’s talking about, and backwards compatibility was one of the first features PS5 confirmed. Looks like they won’t go against this intention.
Backward compatibility is also a big reason for Sony to invest a lot of resources in the PlayStation Now streaming service. Sony just slashed the price of PlayStation Now, allowing players to pay lower fees to play PS3 titles on PS4. Sony is also working with Microsoft to develop game streaming technology. We still don’t know if PS5’s backward compatibility will apply to PlayStation Now or if it will require a disc, like the Xbox One’s backwards compatibility.
Sony shared a lot of information about the PS5 this week, as well as details about the new PS5 controller. All in all, there’s still more than a year left for the new console to hit shelves and Sony plans to have full details in 2020. Hopefully next time fans hear about PS5, Sony will talk more about backwards compatibility.
