Twitch is steadily losing viewers on its streaming platform, after rival Mixer signed two of its big stars.
Twitch has long been the leader of the streaming platform. Launched in June 2011, this streaming service is a must-visit for everything related to video games.
Recently, Twitch has expanded to offer a wide variety of content – from real life streams to sporting events (like Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix).
Despite its best efforts, Amazon’s streaming service is still experiencing the first drop in viewership in its history.
After the boom in April 2016, Thinkum Media recorded a “clear downward trend” for the first time in Twitch’s history – after hitting 982 million viewers in July.
After Amazon acquired Twitch in August 2014, the streaming service kept going up. “From March 2016 to July 2019, Twitch viewership typically went up, but August and September showed it was going down.”
Since losing star Tyler “Ninja” Blevins in August 2019 to Mixer, Twitch has not been able to stabilize viewership.
Even after Fortnite’s “The End” event happened – causing the Twitch server to crash due to the influx of viewers – October still dropped to 800 million viewers.
Most recently, Michael “shroud” Grzesiek announced his move to Mixer, with Cory “Gothalion” following in his footsteps. Now, only time will tell exactly if Twitch will continue to go down, or they will gradually regain viewership and return to the race.
